Colours of my Childhood - a flash story prompted by +Ian Andrew

Colours of my childhood
"red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue... "

Green. The colour of Ulster's linen fields, of Tollymore and Castlewellan, Glenariff, Strangford drumlins and the A5 to Enniskillen and Castle Archdale.

White. The colour of tumbling waterfalls, of whitewashed country cottages and turf-burning time-locked snapshots of the past at the Folk Museum. Flecks of wind-churned creamy foam blown ashore by Atlantic storms; ranks of brilliant white rollers, crashing onto the Causeway Coast.

Blue. The sky of innocent school holidays, stretching ahead for two months, of innocent and carefree play and outdoor exploration. Also the blue of smoky, antique Ulsterbus.

Black. Black the thick, rich, cloying soil of Armagh farmland. The berries picked from brambles between stone walls in Mourne lanes. Also the black backdrop of our spot of local Troubles.

Orange. The bitter orange tinge, almost a caricature of a former Glorious colour, splashed liberally among politics and culture.

Red. The colour of so much lost potential and so many childhoods destroyed by greed and pride. The Red Hand misappropriated so as no longer to be a symbol for all.

Yellow. Man. What else could it be! Perhaps only soft Downshire hillsides of summer furze scenting the air with coconut.

Pink. The acres of cut glass and vases cluttering my great aunts' house on Malone Park, a slice through time to a gentler people.

The rainbow. The blend of all colours and all things, the realisation that although home shapes who we are, the person we have grown to be only becomes clear so many, many years later.
