I like these questions. I need to consider the "stand-up area." I have a table that would work for this, but I was thinking of removing it because IMO it takes up too much room.

I usually try to set up two areas--one that functions for instruction and small group interaction and another that serves as a living room/reading area. My conference table sits in the middle of the two spaces. I'm also fortunate to have an "idea paint" wall so I try to be careful not to block access to it with things. I don't put much up on the walls other than my framed "think" watercolor and the items my school requires that I post. However, we do post stick-its of our (visible) thinking around the room as we are learning and exploring certain ideas.

This is excellent advice, John. One thing I would also suggest, if a person can swing it, is to plan a trip or something to look forward to. Sometimes, I need to think beyond the current situation. I need to plan for future joy. If things are rough, it helps me if I plan an excursion. It doesn't have to be expensive and it doesn't have to involve travel, but it does need to feel like an escape from the everyday. Of course, as you know John, I'm all about some daily escape into books and movies, too. I'm not sure if a counselor would agree with me that this is healthy, but I'm all about escaping my troubles when I can. :)

The sentiment in this post is beautiful. I l fully agree that we need to slow down and appreciate the beauty, fragility, and power of each moment. I "amen" that!

I love these lessons and thoughts, John. I haven't been able to get into HOC, but The west Wing is still my favorite show ever.

I got rid of my teacher desk a few years ago, and now I tend to perch at a different places in the room depending on what's happening during class that day. I like my round conference table in the middle of the room, but I try not to make a habit of landing in the same spot too often.

It was a slow transition for me. I didn't let go of the desk easily.

I'm glad you guys had a little time together. Yes, geography matters a lot. Even when we are just separated by a few miles, geography matters. Sure, we can still connect through devices and tools, but it isn't the same. There's a connection that happens in shared physical space that simply cannot be replicated virtually. I'm thinking of you, John, separation from a best friend is tough.

"As long as we're being kind, there's really no wrong way to do it either." I appreciate this reflection. Our motives, strategies, and approaches are different and that's okay as long as the ethic of kindness guides us.

There has been a box in my basement that was due to go. Sandy has been asking me when the old trophies were going to go for a long time. Inside the box was an incredible amount of trapped memories. I was amazed how much rushe...

You didn't mention changing your blog around frequently (colors, fonts, name, etc.)! That makes people actually visit the site to see what you've done with things lately. You don't get that in an RSS reader.  ;)

Yes! What John said. I'm all for technology and innovation, but let's hold on to the good stuff in our "dusty spaces" as well.
