"Forty years ago, when deference was not yet dead and the governing classes had not yet discredited themselves through, among other things, an economic crash, an expenses scandal and a despised war, the mere fact of consensus was persuasive. ....To be an outsider in 1975, a Benn or a Powell, made you unreliable and eccentric. Now it makes you a fearless truth-teller, uniquely deserving of trust."

This would never have happened on G+. They're bound to have a tie-in with Google Maps that warns you about the end of piers.

A woman has had to be rescued after walking off a Melbourne pier while checking Facebook on her phone. If you have an embarrassing story of using your phone, you can share your experience with us here: http://bbc.in/1bP6EPd

Police said the woman, who couldn't swim, had managed to keep hold of her phone "throughout the entire ordeal". They urged people to pay more attention when using social media around water.

Why, in politics, the street still beats the tweet.
Forget Field Marshal Twitter. What scares rulers like Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are the street's wild squadrons

As expected, Germany's Constitutional Court today took another step towards granting full equality for gay and lesbian couples who have entered a civil partnership - and delivered a slap in the face to Angela Merkel and her cohorts in the conservative CDU and CSU parties. A good day for equality!

America's culture wars cross the Atlantic and unite old foes in Northern Ireland. It's a queer old world.

When fashion really is to die for: The tragedy of the factory collapse in Bangladesh once again highlights what happens when emerging economies compete in an ever-downward spiral of lower production costs to satisfy the rich world's demand for cheap clothing. The Clean Clothes Campaign is trying to do something to improve conditions for the vulnerable workers in these sweatshops.

Unfortunately I still cannot view footnotes made in Word when I open the document in Kingsoft Office. Am I doing something wrong or is this simply not possible? I really need this feature; without it, I'll have to stick with the otherwise outdated Documents to Go.

Page size doesn't make a difference, Mike. Thanks to the Kingsoft team for your response. It would be great to have this feature some day!

Some good news for all of us who've been signing petitions in the wake of the Bangladesh fire tragedy. Let's hope the other big names in the industry follow suit.

Why banging on about immigration may not help British Tories as much as they think.

Best bar in Lisbon! Went there for three nights in a row and it got better every time. Great drinks served by super-friendly staff in a cool and quirky venue to some pretty funky beats. Expect the unexpected!

Fabulous Indian food in the heart of the trendy Nørrebro district. There is a great choice for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike, with the Balti dishes and the home-made paneer being particularly good. All dishes are freshly cooked to the level of spiciness you wish to have. Service is fast and efficient, with friendly waiters always ready to advise on the best dishes and combinations to order. Price are also very reasonable for the quality of food on offer.

Worst airport experience ever. On arrival, I had to queue for 20 minutes to buy a metro ticket as there aren't enough machines. On departure, it took a full hour to get through security in an endless queue that twisted and turned right down to the check-in area in Terminal 2. It is also a very long way to the gates and there is no seating once you get there. Not that I had time to sit down anyway after the totally unacceptable wait to get through security...

Wonderful vegetarian food, freshly cooked before your eyes. Outside seating in a peaceful, small square. A perfect place to enjoy good food and relax after a hard day's sightseeing! Book in advance to be sure of a table.
