A great project by EFF, Mozilla, and U of Michigan to provide free, automated SSL certificates for websites.Yes!

Google introduces the Web Start Kit. I think I will give this a try on my next "from scratch" project. Has anyone tried it?

RANT: +Fido  / +Rogers Communications

I got a bill today from +Fido  for $25. I cancelled my Fido account in June so why did I get a bill for $25 you might ask. There is a story...

Shortly after I cancelled my Fido account (moved my number to Koodo) I lost my credit card. Not thinking I owed Fido anything, I did not give them my new credit card number. On August 7 I got a phone call to my home number that I owned them money. After some discussion it turns out that you have to give 30 days notice to cancel so I had to pay for a month that I did not use. Fair enough, I guess I should have read that 4 point font text. I gave them my credit card number to pay the bill and be done with it.

Not quite. The next month, on September 7 I got a bill in the mail (yes paper this time) for $25. So I called to explain that I paid my bill. The rep said that it was a charge because they tried to charge my card 3 times and it did not go through. Further she claimed that the credit card company charges them when this happens. (An outright lie, which I verified with my credit card company today.) I can't see my bills because they are electronic and I can't access my account online anymore (go figure), although for a charge she would be happy to send me any bill I want. By this time I was sick of talking to her, so I give her my credit card number to be done with it.

Not quite. Today I get a bill for $25 (deja vu). I called to find out why. It turns out that they attempted to charge my old card with previous $25. And it failed so now I owe them another $25. Really! He explains that after 4 attempts I am charged a $25 fee. (No lie this time, but notice that the count is up from 3). Also the card would be removed from my account after 6 attempts but since I called and made a manual payment the counter got reset. After much discussion, where he almost agrees with me that this charge is stupid, I ask to make sure that my credit card has been removed from my account so that this does not go on forever. He said that it has been removed. I make it clear that I expect a credit but he explains that he can't do that. (Yeah right, I am sure if I was a current customer calling to move to another provider, there would be lots that he could do.) So, I asked to speak with his manager. This took about half an hour, so far. After about 20 minutes on hold, the call disconnects.

Good thing I gave him my call back number. I am sure the manager will call me any minute. (But I won't hold my breath!)

How many companies can just make up charges to charge former customers? Is Rogers in financial trouble? Is that why they need to steal money from former customers? Has Rogers done this to you?

Steve Gibson has come up with an incredibly clever new way to log into websites. I hope it gets implemented soon. If you don't feel like reading the page you can listen to Security Now episode 424.

Are you switching cell phone carriers? You have to give your current carrier 30 days notice of cancellation. So, if you can, call your carrier and cancel your account. Ask when the service will stop and then time your switch just before the date. That way you can keep your phone number without being gouged in the process.

Also, cell phone companies will unlock your phone (for a charge) so you can take it with you to your new carrier.

I downloaded Threema for secure messaging. Seems like a really good implementation but I don't know anyone using it. Message me if you are.

This browser add-on allows you to use PHP encryption with webmail. Only works with Chrome and Firefox right now. (I know, I am the only person in the world that prefers Safari!) I played with the Chrome extension and it works perfectly.
