New Greetings Card, T-Shirt, etc: "Hosiery"
A new silly doodle.  When I thought of this idea initially, the brilliant Marc Johns came to mind, so its style is a little influenced by his. You can buy 'Hosiery' greetings cards, prints, mugs, t-shirts etc on both my Redbubble and Spreadshirt shops. * ...

If you're not giving the kids a chance to make corrections to their homework, you're doing it wrong, and setting homework becomes an exercise in covering your arse to make sure you can say you did your job properly as a teacher because you are supposed to set homework, and you can provide evidence to show that you did.

Same goes for any assessment.

Also, machines can't grade assessments accurately and give qualitative feedback.  They can't see what students are doing wrong, and explain how to improve, they can only see that it is wrong.

Believing machines can do assessment for the teacher is exactly the same sort of belief that has led to an uncreative right-or-wrong environment in education, where the only assessment worth doing is one that gives a numerical value that can be entered onto a spreadsheet, have calculations performed on it, and be given as a statistic to parents/inspectors/voters by the school/Government/political opposition to show how well/badly the education system is performing.

Qualitative assessments aren't very good at being turned into statistics, so schools don't do enough of them.  Computers are of limited use in this regard.

But yes, computer technology can give some useful small short term immediate feedback to students, to let them know if they're on the right track and give them a chance to have another go straight away.  Which can only be a good thing, as long as they don't become our sole approach to learning.

Incidentally, from the list I've only set students work from MyMaths, which is great if you happen to be the right level of ability - but it's not responsive enough in terms of giving lots more practice with the same basic skill if you struggle on it, it will just give you another identikit set of questions (with the numbers changed) over and over again, rather than ease you in with something easier first.  And it doesn't tell teachers where students went wrong, only what score they got.
