“David Ogilvy pounded the editorial/native-ad drum incessantly. He proved that ads designed to look like editorial pages gather far more readers than those that don’t. Here’s an example of the kind of ad he espoused (see below). It’s got a nice, beautiful picture with people for visual interest. The copy looks like an article, and the headline draws you in with curiosity.” https://buff.ly/2zt0Ro2

“This is the kind of cross-pollination advertising that is contributing to the breakdown of traditional media channels. One post by Kardashian in one day gets 2.1 million likes and almost 30,000 comments. That one post – just a photo! – is reaching more people than many primetime cable TV shows that last a half hour. One day on her account (if she posts four times) gathers up more eyeballs and engagement than all the cable news channels combined. These are people commenting and engaging with the post. The potential reach is 109 million people, and the ones interacting with the posts are consistently in the 1.5 million to 2 million range (likes).

It’s worth mentioning again. People – especially the young ones – are constantly on the “black mirrors.” That’s the new TV, and advertisers have been exploiting these new platforms for years.” https://buff.ly/2KtuSsU

“A lot of media critics and futurists get a kick out of comparing the common state of things to the 1998 movie The Truman Show. In that movie, some hapless schmuck gets picked out of a baby lottery to be manipulated by TV show directors and producers – including a wacky cast of actors that keep him in the dark.” https://buff.ly/2N9efQV

“We let such useless information, tripe, and stupidity into our minds. We dumbly consume words, images, and sounds from salacious sources that masquerade their alerts and offers as somehow relevant to our lives. This is the news media that pretends some ignorant and extremist view might enlighten us, the network that says the reality of a few entitled brats being filmed without filter might entertain us, the webpage that cons us into thinking we are miserable without their product. From all this we do not grow wiser but less informed, not entertained but numbed, not wealthier but poorer.” https://buff.ly/2lFm0kY

“So does TV watching create inner peace? Unfortunately it does not. Although for long periods your mind may not be generating any thoughts, it has linked into the thought activity of the television. It has linked up with the TV version of the collective mind and is thinking its thoughts. Your mind is inactive only in the sense that it is not producing thoughts. It is, however, continuously absorbing thoughts and images that come through the TV screen. This induces a trancelike passive state of heightened susceptibility not unlike hypnosis. This is why it lends itself to manipulation of “public opinion,” as politicians and special-interest groups as well as advertisers know and will pay millions of dollars to catch you in that state of receptive unawareness. They want their thoughts to become your thoughts, and usually they succeed.” https://buff.ly/2tKdC7E

“But the “real news” aggressively competes for my attention. Heck, even my email inbox has news and stories by professional marketers that are just begging for attention. And, those people are utterly fantastic at grabbing my attention with subject lines and lead hooks.

What are we supposed to do about this basic conundrum?  The question to ask yourself every day is: Where are you training your focus? What are you paying attention to and why?

What you need to do is question your needs and motives – then discard the “news” that has no effect on your work and goals.

Sounds simple? It is.” https://buff.ly/2lC5amV
