Advertising's tumbleweed moments. How advertising, especially TV advertising, is becoming the wrong answer even when it is palpably the right answer. #advertising
Advertising research has got much harder of late. So says a researcher friend of mine. As if it weren't bad enough to have to schlep out to the suburbs three nights a week, and subsist on br...

Casual sexism in Spanish. My daughter's Spanish class comprises 7 girls (chicas) and 1 boy (chico). But the presence of that single boy means that the teacher uses "chicos" (masculine) as the collective plural noun for the class as a whole. Penny is not impressed.

My thoughts, such as they are, on #indyref.
The worst that could happen if Scotland votes Yes in the Independence Referendum is far worse than the status quo, and that's why I'll be voting No.   **********   It's not about t...

On Thursday afternoon I'm reading (performing) a short story that I wrote at The Edinburgh Book Festival. It is called Blood Bath and it is the story of a salmon getting a tattoo. It is slightly less surreal and a lot less gory than it sounds.

In real life I got inked myself. It was a bit surreal but not at all gory. This is that story.
A needle to the waist punctures the girl's bravado.   "Holy shit," she gasps as the gun rattles to life, and I'm glad I opted for the upper arm rather than the lower abdomen. Trevor sai...

Blog post about modern agency planning. Looking beyond "The voice of the consumer." #planning
"Planning is the voice of the consumer." The stock, clichéd, answer to the question "what do agency planners do?" Well, in addition to being stock and clichéd, it also remains true. It is accurate ...

Great dialogue and great casting are sadly underrated by today's visually obsessed advertising industry. We need more characters.

Post inspired by lunch in New York with a true advertising character - +George Tannenbaum (Ad Aged).
I thought George and I would talk, by which I mean bitch, about advertising. But we didn't. Turns out he's far too interesting for that. We talked about New York City, Brooklyn, the New York Subway...

Indy Goggles™.

My second ever politically motivated post - both in the space of a week.

#indyref  is a big deal.
The fence is not an option in the Scottish Independence Referendum. To exercise your democratic right to vote is to get off your bum and jump down on one side or the other. Yes or No, black or whit...

What we can learn about comms planning for behaviour change from a savvy, streetwise French teacher. #stimulusandresponse #truestory

A very short (true) story about looking down rather than up in New York City.
I kept reminding myself to look up in Manhattan. Even a tourist is quick to forget just how blessedly high and mighty and vertical and vertiginous everything is. But sometimes, even in New York Cit...
