Keli Mutu Setting
Keli Mutu is a passively degassing stratovolcano capped by three crater lakes containing exotic fluids and whose physico-chemical expressions have changed dramatically through the years. The volcano is located on Flores, an island along the Lesser Sunda islands chain of Indonesia. An early description of Keli Mutu was provided by the French naturalist LeRoux, who mentions it in his travel log of eastern Indonesia in 1896. A more comprehensive geologic and topographic survey was performed in the 1920′s by the Dutch colonial geologist Kemmerling, who traveled through Flores on horseback and early motor vehicle. Since 1929 no publicly reported systematic survey of Flores has been done using modern techniques. A map of Flores (TPC N-12BG) was published in 1972 as part of the World Aeronautical Chart (WAC) series, but the topographic information is sketchy.

We get up early in the morning at 1.00 AM. Our destination this morning is the renowned and unique Kelimutu national Park. From Moni our vehicle ascends the steep sealed road to a point within a short walking distance of the lookout at Kelimutu, at an altitude of 1690 meters above sea level.
Kelimutu is a volcano, close to the town of Moni in central Flores Island of Indonesia containing three summit crater lakes of varying colors. Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue and is the westernmost of the three lakes. The other two lakes, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) are separated by a shared crater wall and are typically green or red in color, respectively. The lake colors do vary on a periodic basis. Subaqueous fumaroles are the probable cause of active upwelling that occurs at the two eastern lakes.
From Kelimutu, we descend to the Hotel for breakfast, and than continue our trip to Ende, with a stop at fruit market of Nduaria on the roadside.

Noon-1 p.m.: Set-menu lunch served by Capa Resort.
1:30 p.m.: Return to the hotel.

Tana Toraja or Toraja Land, Sulawesi Island is the third most popular destination in Indonesia after Bali and Java. Located 328KM north of Makassar and known for its unique culture and ancient traditions. The Sulawesi island it self offers great variety of exotic culture, natural wonders and friendly people. It is another unspoiled paradise of Indonesia. A journey to the odd world of Mysterious Toraja People is truly a rare adventure, made specially eerie by their haunting tombs, holes carved out of sheer rock faces guarded by wooden effigies that stare out across the jungle.

Flores, the island named ‘flowers’ by 16th-century Portuguese colonists, has become Indonesia’s ‘Next Big Thing’. In the far west, Labuanbajo is a booming tourist town that combines tropical beauty with nearby attractions such as Komodo National Park, myriad superb dive spots and beach-dappled little islands.
The often lush interior is attracting an ever-greater river of travellers who, in just a few days’ journey overland, encounter smoking volcanoes, spectacular rice fields and lakes, exotic cultures and hidden beaches. You’ll even see plenty of steeples, as away from the port towns most people are nominally Catholic. And many more people are part of cultures and groups that date back centuries, and live in traditional villages seemingly unchanged in millennia.
The 670km serpentine, yet rapidly improving, Trans-Flores Hwy skirts knife-edge ridges that sheer into spectacular river canyons, brushes by dozens of traditional villages, and always seems to have a perfectly conical volcano in view. Roads of varying quality branch off into areas few tourists have explored.
