I've learned most of these a while ago from various sources, and after I started applying them I began receiving praise on my awesome presenting skills (which I still don't think I deserve).
Got a talk coming up? Want it to go well? Here's some starting points. I give a lot of talks. Often I'm paid to give them, and I regularly get very high ratings or even awards. But every time I lis...

While this is pretty awesome from a technical point of view, I keep trying to calculate what average haproxy restart frequency is needed to affect a significant percentage of requests (and I keep getting ridiculous answers).
HAProxy: Cornerstone of Reliable Websites. One primary goal of the infrastructure teams here at Yelp is to get as close to zero downtime as possible. This means that when users make requests for www.yelp.com we want to ensure that they get a response, and that they get a response as fast as ...

This is a very popular piece of programming lore, which is often reposted. Many people have read this story without fully understanding it, which is a shame, because it really gives you a taste for what it took to be an elite programmer in the early days of computing (late 1950′s / early 1960′s) ...

Pretty awesome, I wonder if this will lead to in-kernel TLS for everyone.

Each time you open your microwave oven early, you risk giving an astrophysicist false hopes.
Abstract: "Perytons" are millisecond-duration transients of terrestrial origin, whose frequency-swept emission mimics the dispersion of an astrophysical pulse that has propagated through tenuous cold plasma. In fact, their similarity to FRB 010724 had previously cast a shadow over the ...

I wonder if it has any connection with git-annex.
Distributed version control systems like Git have enabled new and powerful workflows, but they haven't always been practical for versioning large files. We're excited to announce Git Large File Storage (LFS) as an improved way to integrate large binary files such as audio samples, datasets, graphics, and videos into your Git workflow. Git LFS is a new, open source extension that replaces large files with text pointers inside Git, while storing t...

Another piece on "boring" tech.
New technologies may be shiny and exciting, but boring technology lets you spend all your time writing code and building new things that actually work.
