Fundraising needs to be more like sales, and nonprofits run more like a business. That’s what young professionals in Milwaukee will face in the future. And, according to United Community Center Executive Director Ricardo Diaz, “They’ll have to have their elevator speech at the ready."

Interesting and poignant.
Given marketers' top objectives for 2015 (see chart from Marin Software) and combined with what I've seen in the explosion of programmatic digital media (including rampant ad fraud), here's a list of hard questions that every marketer should ask their media agency in the new year.

Join me in helping the world in a small way through micro loans on Kiva.org.
A portion of the loan helped a member to repair the garage where he runs his business, in order to make it cuter and more comfortable.

An interesting profile of an influencer.
As the end of the year approaches, I thought it was time I practice what I preach and really reflected on my key moments in 2014.Social media has been a major game changer in the last decade for me personally and I’m sure for you all too and 2015 is set to be no different. As always, I’m very grateful for the opportunities and experiences that I have encountered throughout the year and one of the most enjoyable has been the experience of blogging...

A solution to one of the biggest challenges in sales and donations, retention.

Employment
  • Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City
    Vice President of Resource Development
In a time of economic downturn, I increased revenue by over 30% at Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City (NHS). Establishing major donors, new sponsors and diversifying revenue to address a critical need for sustainable funding. I orchestrated major events during the 30th Anniversary year targeting new stakeholders who became donors. NHS enables individuals and families to invest in, preserve and improve their Neighborhoods, their Homes and their Future.
  • New York Theological Seminary
    Vice President of Institutional Advancement
Restructuring development to more effectively meet the needs of the organization, I successfully wrapped up a $14-million capital campaign at New York Theological Seminary (NYTS). One piece of a cross media camping I led included a series of videos showcasing the Masters in Divinity program for inmates at Sing Sing Prison. The campaign brought us to achieve top SEO on both Google and Bing. I restructured and ran five departments and led board training. I also enjoyed building relationships with people like The Very Reverend James Parks Morton. The organization embraces diverse constituencies and communities, challenging them to achieve a greater degree of love and justice in the world.
  • Riverside Church in the City of New York
Interim Director of Stewardship and Development
I maintained a stable revenue stream during an extended time of transition through three senior ministers within less than two years establishing major donor program, revitalizing donor cultivation events (including a summer jazz series) and setting board protocols for transparency, disclosure and confidentiality. I also created a series of videos revising web pages and utilizing long-standing members of the congregation. The organization celebrates inclusive diversity and inspires personal, spiritual and social transformation.
  • The Neuropathy Association
    Interim Development Director
I was accountable for developing fundraising campaigns supporting clients with neuropathy through awareness, education, support, advocacy, and research. this led to 10% growth in leadership gifts from new constituencies. I increased web traffic 50% by creating, launching, and managing interactive web pages supporting five facets relevant to achieving organization’s mission.

Diversification & Visionary Leadership Skyrocket Revenue The organization's funding had declined steadily for over two years; I established collaborative relationships with new sponsors, launched a Leadership Donor Initiative and produced no-cost cultivation events. I needed a price on a piece of furniture and the only person who could help refused to leave the register with a line of about 15 people. What a crock. This place has surely deteriorated under whatever management they now have. I remember when Bob ran it and it was so much smoother.
