Choice quote: “She just couldn’t handle the juice, man. I was driving up Van Ness one day and the roof unit started buzzing real loud. The whole engine compartment caught on fire and all the plastic under the hood started to melt. I kind of wish I would have saved it – it would have made a cool sculpture now that I think about it.”

Select photos from the ice climbing trip to the Canadian Rockies last month - a fun week! Bad avalanche conditions kept us from getting on some of the desired objectives, but we made the most of it... :)

Dog sitting and skiing mix pretty well, it turns out! Tamarack Peak and Castle Peak... short tours but extra fun due to our 4-legged companion, Athena. :)

+Peter Valchev Thanks, I have a new PT who is doing a great job, but it's a tough recurrence of an old problem that I thought I had solved with core and flexibility work, but then I pushed myself harder than I had in a long time, and it returned.

One of our balloons has had quite a journey over the past few weeks. It did a lap around the world in 22 days, and has just clocked the project’s 500,000th kilometer as it begins its second lap. It enjoyed a few loop-de-loops over the Pacific ocean before heading east on the winds toward Chile and Argentina, and then made its way back around near Australia and New Zealand. Along the way, it caught a ride on the Roaring Forties — strong west-to-east winds in the southern hemisphere that act like an autobahn in the sky, where our balloons can quickly zoom over oceans to get to where people actually need them.

Traversing the stratosphere is particularly challenging this time of year because the winds actually change direction as the southern hemisphere moves from warmer to colder weather, resulting in divergent wind paths that are hard to predict. Since last June, we’ve been using the wind data we’ve collected during flights to refine our prediction models and are now able to forecast balloon trajectories twice as far in advance. In addition, the pump that moves air in or out of the balloon has become three times more efficient, making it possible to change altitudes more rapidly to quickly catch winds going in different directions. There were times, for example, when this balloon could have been pulled into the polar vortex – large, powerful wind currents that whip around in a circle near the stratosphere in the polar region – but these improvements enabled us to maneuver around it and stay on course. We can spend hours and hours running computer simulations, but nothing teaches us as much as actually sending the balloons up into the stratosphere during all four seasons of the year.

Take a look through our photo album to see some of the specific improvements that have been made to the balloon technology, thanks to the lessons we’ve learned in flight.

Ever wondered how tech companies respond to law enforcement requests to provide user data? Google made this video, which tries to be educational yet amusing - it's a serious subject, no doubt! Watching it is highly recommended...

Probably the best breakfast place I've ever been to. Keep up the awesome, Squeeze In! My favorite is the Racy Tracy... their home-made sauces are to die for.

We first met Bob while skiing at a backcountry lodge in Canada, and he seemed like a fantastic resource for the Truckee area, knowledgeable and friendly! As things happened, two years later he helped us with buying our first home in Truckee, which went great! When you work with this real estate group, you have a team of top notch individuals who know the area well. We worked with Kris and Laura a lot, who were both very responsive and made sure we met our closing schedule. I hadn't realized this before, but buying a house is a 100-step process (or sure feels like it), fraught with paperwork and bureaucracy, so you *will* need the help of people to do everything right and in time. :-) I believe we communicated with them & they were working with us every single day over the 30-day closing process, especially through email and phone, and I can highly recommend them for buying the house of your dreams!

My favorite Mexican joint to hit on return from Yosemite trips. Fresh squeezed orange juice is amazing (they always have fresh fruit!) and the food is great, less greasy than usual. Love the fajitas! Staff is very friendly as well :)

I bought a used truck from Dan Wiebold Ford and they were amazing to deal with all-around! I have been looking for something very specific and live out-of-state (in California). When this vehicle popped up, I emailed them and Rob Sorenson replied right away. He was extremely friendly and patient and worked with me to answer all of my questions for several days. Then I arranged a one-way flight, and Rob picked me up from the hotel the next day with the truck - awesome! Paperwork/everything went smoothly, and they made me feel like VIP! I was out of there in < 1 hour to make the long drive home. Highly recommend dealing with them, I was nervous being out-of-state, but it was so worth it! I wish every dealer was like this, I really feel like they are unique!

My favorite sushi place in the area. The salmon nigiri is to die for! In general all of their fish is really fresh and delicious. The rolls are also great and the portions/cuts of fish are generous for the price. Staff is very friendly too!
