We hosted wedding and we created custom etched wine bottles - when they both came at the same time it was pretty nice. We sold people custom made wine bottles - the margins were great - sure they were a lot of work - but I'm pretty sure not many have been thrown in the recycle bin... #owningawinery #customwine #winerywedding

That time in winter when you've slogged through a lot of the pruning and turn around and realise just how much more you've got to go. And how much mulching of the prunings you've still got to do. But every minute is out in nature and simply beautiful to the soul beyond words. #owningawinery #winterpruning

Shiraz vines after a machine harvest. Just so you can see the difference. The machine harvester knocks the berries off the stalks so this is what you're left with at pruning time. #owningawinery #Shiraz #machineharvest

More vineyard talk. These are Shiraz vines about 22 years old. No matter how carefully you prune you'll find the crown of the vine is creeping up higher than the fruit wire. That's when the chainsaw comes out and you do the big cuts to lop off the crown and put down two new fresh cordons. The pale colour you see in the vines is an anti-bacterial paint to cover the big cuts. Yeah, it makes for a very long pruning season. #owningawinery #grapevinepruning #Shiraz

Taken at the end of winter, the pruning's done, the vines are tied down, we've started the weed sprays and the rain's still coming down. These are Cabernet Sauvignon vines after the rain. #owningawinery #cabernetsauvignon

I'm 100% convinced that out in the country there's one set of rules for people who get on with council and the rest. Fortunately we got on super well with council and it made life a breeze when it came to local red tape. We even got to make the Mayors port two years running - these bottles went out all over the shire and it sure boosted our business in the area. #owningawinery #port #customwinebottles

Screwcaps are everywhere now and it's accepted that fine wines can come in a screwcap. It wasn't always the case. We agonised for a long long time to change from cork to screwcap. Eventually the superior seal and cleanliness of screwcap won out. And the simple fact we could lay down the bottles straight after capping and not have to stand them up for 24 hours after corking saved a lot in double handling. Seems so easy in hindsight.... #owningawinery #screwcapwines

A sea of great looking green at the end of December - so the middle of summer. Shiraz grape in the front and you can see the change to Cabernet Sauvignon about half way up the photo. These vines were about 20 years old at this time, they had no irrigation and were on sandy soils so the flavours were wonderfully intense. #owningawinery

At the cellar door you're working with the public. That means anybody and anyone can rock in at anytime. Here's a ute club stopping in on a day out. For the non-Aussie people, a ute is like a pickup truck. And it was all good business coming in the door and wine bottles going out the door. #owningawinery #wineryfunctions

People in the country love a party - and they don't want to cook, they don't want to clean - they simply want to rock up and get it all done for them - and after a while you figure out how to cater for 300 people and not lose sleep the night before - this is our Australia Day celebration from 2008 #owningawinery #wineryfunction #AustraliaDay
