In Greece, yesterday was a special day, "kathari deftera" or "Clean Monday" , marking the conclusion of carnival and the beginning of Lent. The traditional Clean Monday lunch includes lenten dishes, such as all kinds of seafood (except fish) and plenty of pulses.

The phenomenon we call "the Vikings" explained through a wooden toy boat. A thousand-year-old wooden toy boat! Respect to our Norwegian archaeologist colleagues for their splendid work. The so-called Vikings were not just raiders, but excelled as traders and founders of cities, York and Dublin being the key examples. At Peter Sommer Travels, we are eager to tell that story and we do so on our tours in Britain and Ireland.

Chain restaurants are not part of the experiences we offer on our tours and cruises in Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Ireland. But should we ever find ourselves at Marino outside Rome, we might just make an exception...

Have a look at these pictures. Maybe they're not all surprising but they're certainly fun. In fact, we get to see about half of these things being grown or harvested on our various tours and cruises in six different countries!

Amazing colours: a 3rd or 4th century AD mosaic floor in the Roman villa at Chedworth, Gloucestershire, England. Like it? Come to see it on our Exploring Wessex tour this summer: http://www.petersommer.com/uk/tours/england/exploring-wessex/

Great news: we have just won the AITO (UK Association of Independent Travel Operators) Silver Award for Travel Operator of the Year 2016, based on exceptional customer feedback - and coming very close to the Gold Award we won last year! We'd like to congratulate the other winners and to express our gratitude to all those who have made this possible again: our guides, crews and staff, and most importantly, our wonderful guests. Thank you very much! (The image shows Peter Sommer himself, second from left, among the winners). And if you're wondering why we get such great reviews: give us a try! http://www.petersommer.com/

It looks unreal, doesn't it? A view from the mainland of Dalmatia, across the medieval town of Korčula on the island of the same name, further across some nearby islets and on to another part of the mainland in the distance. Korčula is a wonderful place to explore, and the surrounding waters are breathtakingly beautiful. Check out our expert-led cultural tours in Croatia: http://www.petersommer.com/croatia/tours/
