The Milky Way is one of the most beautiful and mysterious places in the universe. In our day-to-day lives we almost never stop and think about this powerful mass of energy, light, and gravity - completely full of the unknown. To capture this magic, two camera types had to be used. This was a two-man job. My assistant Mark set up the astro camera (specialized for shooting the stars) while I set up the other rig to capture the landscape. For weeks we followed weather reports and studied the earth's rotation, waiting night after night for when the skies would be crystal clear.

Finally, patience paid off - we were blown away by this incredible view of the glimmering cosmos. Billions of stars were calling, each one telling a different story. 36 x two-minute long exposures were stacked in order to reveal the universe's hidden brilliance – normally invisible to the naked eye. Vibrant tones of pink, orange, and purple turned the image into a total cosmic dream. But to get this shot just right, it needed to be paired with the raw, humble presence of earth. This amazing tree full of character, reached towards the night sky - it was the perfect scene to complete the image we were chasing.

Photography is all about light and perspective. You have to have both when shooting New York City. I wanted to get a shot that differed from the millions of other photographers, so I looked for a style that would be iconic Peter Lik.

This was no easy task. “Under the Bridge” was it – powerful, iconic and stunning. I chose a panoramic format to really exaggerate the perspective of the shot to isolate the image out of the frame. I deliberately blew the background out, giving it a surreal, dreamy, painterly effect. It was all a big risk, something I would not normally do, but it paid off. The image was perfect.

You can almost feel the rivets in the bridge and the reflected light and long exposure gave the image the quality that I was chasing. This image breaths with its own sense of scale and uniqueness – it’s what I strive for. New York City – you can feel it.

Love it. At first, in the thumbnail, I couldn't tell what it was - like a steam-punk iron basket at the bottom of a hot-air balloon. Then I opened it up and it transformed into the bridge right before my eyes. The beauty of this shot is that you captured the heartstopping stillness in the city that never sleeps. Well done Peter Lik. I love your style.

Fire and Ice

Only 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon is a amazing jewel. As the season changed to winter in early December, I wanted to capture the mood of this canyon.

As I hiked out, through the desert, the smell was arousing. I wanted a point of interest and framed up the Joshua Tree on the left hand side. A fresh snowfall contrasted against the red cliffs and as first light hit the mountains a whole painterly scene presented itself to me.

Being the only person out there to witness this was an amazing experience I’ll never forget. The magical light only lasted a few seconds and I shot like a madman, making sure to capture it. The desert is a very special place to me, and I’m glad to share this special moment with you.

Serenade

As I sat on a worn out bench at the water’s edge, I reflected on the beautiful moments of the past with every sip of wine. All around me, the city grew more and more silent – peaceful. 10P rolled in and out as all the shops and restaurants began to shut their doors for the evening. The bustling streets were replaced with a sensual, tranquil atmosphere and the faint smell of an old wood-burning fireplace hung in the air.

I knew the moment I was waiting for would soon be at hand. I needed the ultimate quiet and calm that only occurs during the late hours. Finally, midnight was upon me and the atmosphere grew incredibly serene. As I pressed the shutter, a completely romantic and blissful feeling came over me – mirrored perfectly in the still water of this historical city.

Secret Passage

So much of Venice’s charm and character is found in the endless canals, corridors, and alleyways – passages that seem to spring up around every turn and lead to these tucked away worlds, known only to the descendants whose families have been residing here for ages. I was happy to get completely lost in this floating city.

After setting my alarm early, I ventured out to experience the streets in solitude. One passage led to the next and the next and the next... I couldn’t stop – I was addicted to the sunrise reflecting its warm glow off the street.

My instincts led the way as I chased the light and hoped for the right shot. As I turned a final corner I found what I had been looking for. I immediately knew only a wide angle lens would be right to enhance this dramatic perspective.

When I look at this image, I am drawn in by the allure of Venice and its secret history.

Becoming

I had spent two weeks on every imaginable back road in south Australia searching for the true essence of this great land. This morning I reckon I got pretty close to capturing just that.

Throughout the previous day I had been watching the changing clouds, feeling that something was going to happen. I carefully composed the shot knowing each silhouette was critical.

Just as the sun pierced the horizon an incredible glow came out the middle of nowhere and illuminated the scene. The muted pastel colors gave the scene a really special mood. My heart raced as I pressed the shutter soaking the scene up on film. It was a magical moment.

Temple of The Sun

Photography is all about capturing a mood, a feeling. I feel a special connection with nature, often very powerful. This late afternoon was phenomenal.

Standing on the edge of the ocean, I gasped in awe as the holy light illuminated this cathedral window. I spent days at the location, anticipating the exact angle of light shining through this gorgeous passage. I used a neutral density filter and a long exposure to change the mood of the shot.

As the pounding surf hit the rocks, the golden light illuminated the sea mist into a shaft of glory. Moments later, the sun disappeared and it was just a normal scene. Witnessing such a moment and capturing it is what I live for. Mother Nature is so powerful, I never underestimate Her.

River of Zen

I am always trying to get a different perspective on nature. Hiking the streams and rivers of Colorado for days was a real challenge as I searched for a shot that I knew was on my mind.

This part of the stream really felt right. The river gurgled over the boulders and I noticed a low lying branch hanging over the river. I knew capturing them in one shot would be a real challenge. I needed a long exposure of one second to give the river a painterly feel, and needed total calmness. The river was causing a very mild breeze, just enough to move the leaves throughout the exposure.

After three hours of intense shooting, I managed to capture one totally calm frame. My efforts paid off. River of Zen. Hope you feel it like I did.

Moonlight in Venice

Despite the ancient charm and historical setting of Venice, it has just as much vitality and buzz as any modern metropolis – with pedestrians and motorists hurrying about their day-to- day lives. After spending some time in this fantastical city, I came to realize that shooting during early morning was the way to go. I craved the silence and the space to capture this unique place without distraction.

After hours of patiently waiting and searching, I found my vision. This authentic scene looks as if it was created by an artist of the Renaissance – a painting set in the days of Romeo and Juliet. The contrast of colors blew my mind – the rustic feel was gently highlighted by the soft glow of an azure night sky. The scent of the flowers on the nearby balconies filled the air as I pressed the shutter and realized I was standing in a true fairy tale.

Happy 4th of July!

FIFTY

Becoming a U.S. citizen was the biggest day of my life. I’ll never forget the feeling – I had a total rush throughout my whole body. It was like being born again. I was so proud.

The U.S. flag really sums up the beauty of America – its colors, the flowing lines and the stars all represent the beauty and independence of this nation. I deliberately chose a slow shutter speed to accentuate the movement of the flag to give it that real artistic feel.

Waiting for that perfect windy day was the secret. I took hundreds of exposures – each one looked totally different. This frame really spoke to me – totally proud – the same feeling I got the day I became a US Citizen.

Enchanted City

Prague is a city that has stood the test of time and the elements, outlasting the devastation of war and surviving the harsh presence of communism. Through the years, it has still retained the alluring feel of a romantic European city – classic, warm, and historical.

I wanted to capture the powerful silence that seems to overshadow the day-to-day buzz of this enchanting place. I was on a quest to capture the real Prague – its tangible aura and raw emotion. All I had to do was follow the cobblestones that led me to some of the city’s most stunning sites and I would find my vision.

Twilight proved the best time to shoot – a glowing blue sky still managed to offer light to the timeless streets and shops below. When I look at this image, I feel as if I could just walk along the curved architecture and leave reality behind.

Story
Tagline
Peter Lik stands at the summit of landscape photography. Lets share the view, shall we?
Introduction

Peter Lik has spent over 30 years pushing the boundaries of fine art. A self-taught pioneer in the field of landscape photography, he has become synonymous with pristine images of cascading waterfalls, ethereal mountain peaks and peaceful desert canyons.

Peter has been shooting expansive scenes of Mother Nature his whole life. Born in Melbourne, Australia to hardworking Czech immigrants, he never took the gift of life’s beauty for granted. Peter’s catalogue of work can be traced back to the essential moment when, at 8 years of age, the gift of a Brownie Kodak camera from his parents set him on a course for destiny. Since his first, fateful snapshot of a spider web in the family garden, Peter has followed his calling to capture and share the most beautiful places on earth.

It was after a trip to the United States in 1984, that Peter discovered the panoramic camera format, a defining moment in his career. Challenged with the dare to “Go big or go home,” Peter did both. For the next two decades, Peter would travel back and forth between the United States and his native Australia, honing his craft and establishing his prominent position in the world of fine art photography.

In the late 90s, Peter took a giant leap forward, taking on a massive project now known as “Spirit of America.” After fifty thousand miles and 1,000 rolls of film, Peter had revealed landscapes from all 50 United States, completing the “biggest challenge of my life.” From there, it was only onward and upward for this remarkable success story.

More landmarks for Lik came in 2011 and 2012, when his iconic images “Ghost” and the highly awarded “Inner Peace,” would both be featured on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. It was on the heels of these major accomplishments that Peter jumped straight into the heart of mainstream culture by starring in the NBC-produced TV series, "From the Edge with Peter Lik.” He had officially become a household name.

In 2014, Peter shattered all world records by selling the most expensive photograph in history. “Phantom,” his black & white masterwork depicting a ghostlike image at Antelope Canyon, was acquired for an astounding $6.5 million. To accompany this sale, Peter’s images “Illusion” and “Eternal Moods” were also acquired for $2.4 million and $1.1 million, respectively. Along with his sale of “One” for $1 million in 2010, Peter now holds four spots out of the top twenty most expensive photographs ever sold. These historic acquisitions not only gained Peter international acclaim, they secured his position as a leader in the field of fine art photography.

Amongst the hundreds of prestigious accolades and merits garnered over the years, Peter has been awarded the title of Master Photographer from both the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and Professional Photographers of America (PPA). He has also been awarded fellowships from the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) and The Royal Photographic Society (RPS).

Lik’s masterworks include “Pele’s Whisper,” “Sacred Sunrise,” “Eternal Beauty” and the highly acclaimed “Ghost.” He has sold upwards of $500 million of artwork to his many valued collectors, including royalty, presidents and celebrities. Peter’s images can be viewed in luxurious hotels, prominent estates, leading corporate offices and in all of his galleries around the United States.

Peter continues to chase the elusive “perfect shot” with greater passion than ever before. When asked about his favorite image, Peter replies: “I haven’t taken it yet.”
