Rawtherapee is getting better and better.

As of the last few weeks, RawTherapee has a very powerful tool called Wavelet Levels, but this tool requires thinking of the image in different terms than most tools. Paul Matthijsse has written an article which sheds light on the practical use of some aspects of this new tool - be sure to take a look, it's well worth it!
https://rawtherapeewavelets.wordpress.com/

The latest "stable" version of RawTherapee is 4.2 (or 4.2.1, that is the full name). The Wavelet Levels tool is available in the development versions, these are the ones with the last number higher than 1. Be sure to use the latest development version you can get, as each one is an improvement over the previous one.  Don't be scared, they are probably even more stable than the officially stable one! At the time of writing, the newest development version is 4.2.233. This will become "RawTherapee 4.3" once we are done tweaking, in a month or two. Use the latest development versions! Test! Report bugs! Get them from http://rawtherapee.com/downloads and see this to report bugs http://rawpedia.rawtherapee.com/How_to_write_useful_bug_reports

Foggy and Freezing...

Went for a walk this morning while one of the kids took minkey (mini hockey for the little ones) and Sandra went for a run.

The fog just lends itself to B&W.

RIP Boof

It's with a little sadness that the cat that chose us to feed him and keep him warm on a winters night has died from injuries sustained from being hit by a car.

In the greater scheme of things, Boof was a stray who made our home his.  He was well loved by the family and we all have fond memories of our "little red head" prone to sunburnt ears and waking me at 4am to be either let out or let in.

While my sleeping patterns may one day return to normal, he forever now will rest in peace.

+Kära Cathryn, I had to take a look at the profile pic... he was always getting into scraps and constantly had scratches on his nose.

After the rain...

A very light drizzle fell this morning.

Grabbed the macro lens and snapped away at the flowers on the Camellia.

Hand holding and such a shallow DoF is so much harder than you think.  It didn't help that the breeze would have its way every now and then.

Autumn colours....

And heavily enhanced I might add...

Hasn't been a busy Autumn for me with the camera. I had hoped to spend a few days over Easter out and snapping the autumnal colours, but for the most of it, the weather just proved overcast with rather dull light, and enough of a lame excuse to not leave home and watch way too many movies.

Anyway, after feeling just a little guilty about doing nothing productive (ok I did get the one side of the shed tidied up) I headed out to Griffith yesterday afternoon, but really, nothing stood out.

I went out again this afternoon with the break in the clouds hopefully leading to a nice looking colour in the sky.... not to be.

Likely my only Autumn shot this year.  We'll see.

Foggy walk...

It was freezing yesterday morning.  But glad I went out.  It was worth the frost bitten fingers.  :)

Tears on the lashes....

OK... so a little wanky... better than what I said on FB "It's just a weed but hey.."  :)

Another macro shot from yesterday's session after the very light rain fall in the morning.

I'd noticed the effect of the water droplets on the Camellia and spent ages taking photos of various flowers in fairly low light, hence the higher than normal ISO.  I also managed to get distracted with the time and rushed inside to get the potatoes and meat sorted to put into the Webber.

Once the food was in and cooking I came back to this dandelion the breeze was blowing it around but I loved the way the effect of the ball would move in and out of focus, it is its own star burst when you're looking at it so highly magnified.

So I found some cardboard to block off the wind as much as possible and dragged out my reflector from the shed to push some light into the scene.

After a bit of mucking about and cramping up contorting myself to get various images, Boof decides he has slept enough and wants to be patted and rubbed.

With no regard to my makeshift wind breaker and reflector set up he barges on in and knocks everything flat.

I'm sure a million things could have been done better with this, more of the image in focus better definition on the droplets, but for all of that, I think it works OK.

Processing consisted of contrast, WB (do love the warmer tones it seems) and some noise reduction.  This is the image as taken it's not cropped.  (Which for some reason makes me just that little happier :) )

A night under the stars....

I'll put it out there, I liked what I was trying to do here... and that was to mix a long exposure of the Milky Way with a bit of light painting, or in this case, I used my flash to light up the foreground.

I'll also add that I got a Chromecast and I like seeing my photos pop up on the big screen, so I really wanted to bolster this album and hopefully get motivated to get out there and do it again... SOON.

I don't think it's too bad, a few things aren't great.  the lens isn't wide enough to pick up more the dust lanes (or as I call it the big crack), but shooting higher up cut out the shed.

This is also one exposure, rather than two with the long exposure and one for the foreground in shaper focus.

Also, this is version 18 of the image processed in +RawTherapee.  The earlier versions of the image were done using earlier versions of this rapidly updating raw processing program.

This was done with version 4.2.147 (beta versions released for windows are available and track fairly closely to the development code base).  These later versions are working wonders with noise reduction and I'm getting a little better with working out the finer points with it.

I'm going to have to find all my winter woollies and get back out and capture the milky way... it really is an enjoyable night under the stars.

Woooo a portrait...

One of those moments you get to capture... I see why people take up portraiture photography... but it's not something I'm about to step into full time.. :)

For now though, I must make the effort to do this more often with the family members.  :)

Story
Introduction
I'm currently the Padre, the Perl IDE Release Manager, I always joke "for now", but it seems that the job remains mine for as long as I want it.

I'll post updates about Padre, but mostly, it's going to be photos... good or bad, you have been warned!  :)

Other than that, I'm a terrible gardener, a poor handy man and a divorced and now re-partnered (and engaged) dad of 2 of my own with an additional 2 for a total of 4 kids in the house.

I have a new DSLR and I'm on the path to learning the craft of photography, which is why G+ works for me.

As someone who has a cat in my profile picture I'd like to state I'm no cat lover, I find them a scourge on the native wildlife, however, that cat does turn out to have adopted me.

The story behind the man behind the cat in the picture is that he was the roaming street Tom.  Awfully friendly and would turn up at the house for a few hours and then move on.

The kids loved him and asked if we could keep him.  Given my distaste for feral animals that can breed, I put him in a cat cage and took him to the RSPCA and asked to be put on the list to re-home him if he wasn't claimed.

I really like this cat, since he was a full Tom he had the biggest shoulders and neck on a cat I've ever seen ( so tough!! ), he had been in fights and had scratches and scars on his nose, funnily enough having seen him with other cats he doesn't appear to be the aggressor, just the one that answers last with the biggest swipe.

So the image you see is just us one afternoon on the couch... I just love the look of the cat -his name is boof (head) - with attitude.  It's like "hey you lookin' at us???"

Anyway, I've updated my profile now in case someone might think that the profile pic with the cat  in the image is a cat lover.... I'm just someone he adopted, even if I took away his manhood.  :)
