Out and about...

I'm made a promise to myself recently to get out and see more of what's around us here in Canberra.  I'm often guilty of having a whole weekend pass by and not leave the city limits.

The past weekend I grabbed the gear and headed out to Captains Flat.  The weather wasn't looking really promising, it was hot and humid, but after getting a lightning shot the night before, I was thinking it wouldn't be necessarily a bad thing.

The clouds really add a dimension to any photo.

Not quite the sunset shot I was after....

Headed out to a little town on Kings Highway called Bungendore for a sunset photo I've had in mind for some time now.  The colours didn't quite pop though.

I've been suffering with a lack of motivation to get up and out of the house, so figured that rather than cook dinner, I'd bribe +Sandra Lavender  to come along with me with dinner at Bungendore and then I'd set up the gear in the location I'd had in mind and see what happened.

All behind me I could see the storm clouds building and even caught glimpses of lightning.

After packing up the gear, I looked over at Sandra, who was still doing OK with the driving and waiting, and asked if she'd been out to Tarago.  We both hadn't, so it was on, a chase of sorts to trail the storm and see what I could catch.

This was taken on the Tarago road, not quite sure where, but you can see the wind turbines on the hill if that gives anyone any reference.

And it was nice to get over the funk of not leaving the house.  I'm feeling charged and enthused again.  :)

Starting to get the hang of +digiKam for the DAM side of things, RAW image processed in +RawTherapee

Boof the cat...

I'm struggling to fire the shutter lately, just busy with a few things.

I did have the camera bag packed for a run out to Tidbinbilla tonight to grab a few starry photos, but after two nights of clear skies, the high level cloud blew in.  So instead I stayed in and watched "Guardians of the Galaxy" with my daughter and Sandra.

While cooking dinner on the BBQ I caught Boof snoozing on the sleeper with the last of the golden light from the sunset hitting him.  Given his general lack of consideration during the night to wake me to let him in or out, I had no problems waking him to see if I could get him to look up.  :)

I've missed #caturday   by 18 minutes here.. but it counts somewhere in the world still.  :)

Day 2 of the B&W Challenge... KERMITD

The owners spend a lot of time, money and effort of their cars. I happened to turn up as, I really hate myself for forgetting his name, was readying "KERMITD" for a "quick cruise before the skids" and a young guy who is building his own tough car.

I was generally an outsider to the conversation, but I did learn a new word, "hats", I think that means the blower, I did hear hair drier, but I already knew that's a turbo reference.

I wasn't excluded from the conversation and as KERMITD's owner finished up he introduced himself and we all shook hands.

That's the cool thing about summernats, hands down.  If you stop by the cars with the owners close by they don't mind having a chat.

I was really impressed with his willingness to chat and answer questions of the young guy and to entertain me as I stuck the camera to my head to take a few action shots.

I only wish I'd really nailed the image I was after, sadly this is the best I got.

Now that is a machine. I think you've nailed the important bit - talking.

Sunrises are my smallest number of images...

For a good reason too... you have to get up so early for them.

While I wrestle with my 'new' server installing linux, which for some reason is just not as simple as it has been in the past, I've had to look back through my images to find something.

I just haven't been out with the camera in a really long time.

This photo was taken in September from the beach just in front of the caravan park in Albany Western Australia.

Albany was our first stop over after the wedding of a friend in Margaret River.

Processed in +RawTherapee.

The sun sets on the National Arboretum

While driving home I took a right turn and stopped and clicked away as the sun set over the Arboretum.

I do like these trees on Dairy Farmers Hill.

Still getting used to the new camera too.  I got caught out with some settings later on..

Lightning and stars...

OK, so having one photo with lightning in it was a good catch for the trip, but this one is the one I'm pretty chuffed with the most.

I've been working on this much of today trying to pull back the green tint in the stars... It's not to be for now....

This was taken on the way back home along the Federal Highway after heading out to Goulburn on the back roads. Shot taken from the Peter Badcoe rest area.

Chooks in the backyard...

Desperate for a photo subject.  :)

One of our three of chooks.  They each have a name of course.   This one is Lucy, the smallest of the three.

Digikam work flow...

Hi everyone,

I've been using rawtherapee on windows for ages to process my images. Something I'm looking into is DAM and it seems digikam is the way to go.

What I'm interested in is people's workflows and how to integrate digikam rt and gimp.

It's a bit like what you get with the Adobe suite where lightroom lets you do raw processing open photo shop and it all remains seemless.

Narooma beach..

A rare trip to the coast. Not sure why we don't do it more often.

I left all the camera gear at home. Mostly because I was grumpy about a whole lot of things. Glad I did though. The problem with bringing it is tge sense of getting "that shot". The weather wasn't the best and not getting up for sunrise was nice.

Breaky at a little cafe right on the mist covered beach and a walk aling the shore afterwards was great.

The only photo was this one of the largest blue bottle I've ever seen.

Post processing in snapseed. :-)

I've vowed to come back though with all the gear and watch the sun rise. :-)

Lovely old unit. Try some bw that concentrates on just the chrome. The lines. The shadows. The shape and curvature. That'll give you something to do Friday :)

Introduction
I'm currently the Padre, the Perl IDE Release Manager, I always joke "for now", but it seems that the job remains mine for as long as I want it.

I'll post updates about Padre, but mostly, it's going to be photos... good or bad, you have been warned!  :)

Other than that, I'm a terrible gardener, a poor handy man and a divorced and now re-partnered (and engaged) dad of 2 of my own with an additional 2 for a total of 4 kids in the house.

I have a new DSLR and I'm on the path to learning the craft of photography, which is why G+ works for me.

As someone who has a cat in my profile picture I'd like to state I'm no cat lover, I find them a scourge on the native wildlife, however, that cat does turn out to have adopted me.

The story behind the man behind the cat in the picture is that he was the roaming street Tom.  Awfully friendly and would turn up at the house for a few hours and then move on.

The kids loved him and asked if we could keep him.  Given my distaste for feral animals that can breed, I put him in a cat cage and took him to the RSPCA and asked to be put on the list to re-home him if he wasn't claimed.

I really like this cat, since he was a full Tom he had the biggest shoulders and neck on a cat I've ever seen ( so tough!! ), he had been in fights and had scratches and scars on his nose, funnily enough having seen him with other cats he doesn't appear to be the aggressor, just the one that answers last with the biggest swipe.

So the image you see is just us one afternoon on the couch... I just love the look of the cat -his name is boof (head) - with attitude.  It's like "hey you lookin' at us???"

Anyway, I've updated my profile now in case someone might think that the profile pic with the cat  in the image is a cat lover.... I'm just someone he adopted, even if I took away his manhood.  :)
