Inever did get to play very much of the original "Star Ocean: Second Story" on PS1. Wish they would put that one onto PSVita, along with all the other Star Ocean games to date. I'd buy them in a heartbeat, and that'd give me enough reason to finally splurge on a PSVita

Long story short. “Star Ocean: First Departure” for the PSP is a game that is the perfect marriage of Star Trek and Final Fantasy.

This game is like “Final Fantasy” set in the “Star Trek” universe, told by the point of view of a  heroes from a medieval backwater planet meeting an advanced “Starfleet” like planetary organization. Gosh, they even have their “Guardian of forever”.

In many ways, it´s more “Trekky” than most Star Trek games, (often reduced to mere dumb shooters) ´cause the science fiction here is on Asimovian levels of quality. Their spaceship has the bridge, engineering, even a mess hall, you could feel at home like in a Federation vessel. There are plenty of alien cities and ships to explore.

I also played the third “Star Ocean” on the PS2 a few years back.  It´s really a game a trekker should take the time to play it, it´s amazingly rewarding.

I LOVE the star ocean series...I've finished all but the second one (I'm playing the PSP version and I'm stuck at the same boss pair near the end that I got stuck at when I played it on the PS1...) I finished the first one...it was great that even at level 99 you couldn't beat the end boss (you actually had to grind to about lv 135 to be able to fight him...but #3 was actually the first one I completed...and 4 was pretty good aside from whiney asshole protagonist for about 1/4th the game.

If you could get any of those games, I would suggest it...the first and second games (and even the third) had great stories to them and great gameplay.  The Second Story was so diverse you could play multiple times and have different characters in your party to choose from (and you also have 2 protagonists stories to choose from for even MORE diversity and multiple playthroughs)

Now I kinda want to get back into playing second story (evolution PSP) just so I can finally see what it takes to crush that boss and finally beat the game.

Masks and stuff are great... but will this just be another Payday?
