Nice article about interviewing:
"
.Many interview techniques test skills that are at best irrelevant to real working life;
.you want somebody who knows enough to do the job right now;
.or somebody smart and motivated enough that they can learn the job quickly;
.you want somebody who keeps getting better at what they do;
.your interview should be a collaborative conversations, not a combative interrogation;
.you also want somebody who you will enjoy working with;
.it’s important to separate “enjoy working with” from “enjoy hanging out with;
.”don’t hire assholes, no matter how good they are;
.if your team isn’t diverse, your team is worse than it needed to be;
.accept that hiring takes a really long time and is really, really hard.
"
You are bad at giving technical interviews. Yes, you. You're looking for the wrong skills, hiring the wrong people, and actively screwing yourself and your company. Without changing anything about your applicant pool, you can hire different people and your company will do better and you will enjoy your job more. I realize these are...

I like that definition, a backlog of technical debt is a good first step. I find myself, as a result of those that came before, inheriting and having to deal with so much debt that keeping it all straight and navigating the interdependencies challenging.
Any thoughts or words of wisdom from experience?

So many ideas so little time! To bad there's no link or instructions on how to provide input.

Interesting and so good ideas but why is this OK for some positions but not others?

Successful entrepreneurs hire for the long run -- not just for today -- avoiding the temptation to settle for people who aren’t 'A' players.

LOL! Sigh :(
This is totally one of those: A and B in a study is actually, A commonly found with B but is actually influenced by C.
For example: I would agree that there might be a high proportion of "dumb" people that are religious, however I would argue they were like that before they "found" religion.
In contrast there are likely a high proportion of people with "average" intelligence that claim to be atheist (and defend their belief religiously) but again they would have had the same level of intelligence before as after.

My thoughts?
The "dumb" religious people are less likely to think critically about their religion.
The "average" atheists are less willing believe in a religion they can't prove scientifically.
