Mr. Gay Namibia Hopes Contest Will Advance Rights In Africa
Hamutenya's story is one of both great hope and achievement from his upbringing. Hamutenya, a young cow herder, came out at age 16 and was immediately taken to a mental hospital by his father. He escaped, eventually reconnecting with his father. Hamutenya later studied nursing in South Africa and returned to Namibia to work as a midwife. Today, Hamutenya is the most visible and vocal gay rights activists in his region and is lobbying for the repeal of anti-sodomy laws.
