+UC Berkeley  Cloud Robotics has potential to improve #robot performance in at least five ways: 1) Big Data: indexing a global library of images, maps, and object data, 2) Cloud Computing: parallel grid computing on demand for statistical analysis, learning, and motion planning, 3) Open-Source / Open-Access: humans sharing code, data, algorithms, and hardware designs, 4) Collective Robot Learning: robots sharing trajectories, job planning, and outcomes, and 5) Crowdsourcing and call centers: offline and on-demand human guidance for evaluation, learning, and error recovery. Ken Goldberg is a Professor of #Industrial #Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) at the University of California, Berkeley as introduced by Matei Ciocarlie. He also holds an appointment in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is an artist, writer, inventor, and researcher in the field of robotics and automation.

MIT Electric #gripper   Alberto Rodriguez, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and graduate student Nikhil Chavan-Dafle, has developed a model that predicts the force with which a robotic gripper needs to push against various fixtures in the environment in order to adjust its grasp on an object.

Hard vs. Soft #Assembly #Automation Increased #Factory Productivity
#Manufacturers have options when considering the incorporation of automation into their processes. The correct mental approach to the implementation of automation is to start with the product and work back to through the automation process. The type of product and volume dictates whether the manufacturer should utilize hard (fixed) or soft (flexible) automation.

When designing a #robotic or automated #assembly machine, applying a gripper correctly unit can make the difference in the reliability and productivity of the assembly machine system or robotic cell. #Gripper calculations will vary depending on many factors such as, part acceleration, part weight, physical size, tooling length, tooling jaw style (encompassing grip or friction grip), tooling jaw material and the number of jaws that come in contact with the part.

No doubt that #robotics is a key component of mainstream automated assembly in #manufacturing processes today. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) reported that 2012 saw the second highest number of robots ever sold: 159,346 units. IFR estimates the worldwide market value for robot systems at $26 billion
