"Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him or her to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy." —Max Ehrmann

I thought I'd share a little weekend project handling speech recognition in web apps - its incredibly easy to set up with even basic JavaScript skills.
Speech recognition is one of those emerging standards that I look forward to being more widely implemented, not in the least because of what it could mean for accessibility of web apps. Interestingly for a powerful feature like this, it has an incredibly simple JavaScript API to use, in just a few lines of code you can get your app to handle speech input.   var recognizer = new webkitSpeechRecognition(); recognizer.onresult = fu...

interesting to see how much Adobe pivoted over the last few years - there's very little left of the Macromedia legacy with this massive focus on the "creative professional" (which in their IMHO somewhat limited definition does not explicitly include developers).

They're arguably doing a great job with the Creative Cloud strategy and I started seeing glimpses of a sensible approach with open source / web standards and commercial tools (e,g, Apache Cordova / PhoneGap, Brackets / Edge Code) but they've unfortunately lost a lot of credibility from their original developer base and still have to deal with some of those consequences. Flash is now the ugly stepchild and by association what were very promising platform solutions like AIR and Flex are either on life support or cast off.

ColdFusion is an interesting anomaly, which I strongly suspect is only still around because of large government clients. I would not be surprised to see it spin off at some point.

I'm not a fan of how Shantanu went about going for their software as a service model and like to think Kevin Lynch - given the chance - would've made some more interesting choices building on the original designer/developer workflow vision rather than this more silo-ed approach.

Nonetheless, some promising things announced today - lets see what tomorrow's keynote brings.

wow, what a treat - 92 year old Toots Thielemans still made a surprise appearance at Jazz Middelheim after announcing his retirement earlier this year - a fantastic rendition of "What a wonderful world"
