Giambotta is a southern Italian vegetable stew. It usually contains eggplant, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and other seasonal vegetables. The market did not have good eggplant when I shopped, so I substituted potatoes. I marinated them overnight in olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic. I added sausage. This is the way it was prepared at a former small Italian restaurant in Chicago. I added a hot banana pepper and a cubanelle pepper for some...

So, there I was, walking slowly in the heat and humidity on the sidewalk. A reckless terrorist cyclist was coming at me. I kept plodding along, watching him swerve out of my way and trying to avoid hitting a lamp post. I threw a few choice obscene words at him, along with reminding him the... <a href="http://www.chicagonow.com/interesting-chicago/2015/07/modest-proposals-for-bicyclists/" class="more-link">Read more »</a>

Former Illinois Governor, Rod Blagojevich, convicted murderer and former suburban police officer, Drew Peterson, and former Gambino crime family boss, John Gotti have three things in common. Their super sized egos, their big mouths, and their love of the limelight. Those three things combined put them in prison. When you get on the Federal radar... <a href="http://www.chicagonow.com/interesting-chicago/2015/07/rod-blagojevich-drew-peterson-and-jo...

Cole slaw is one of those summer time staples. It is a great accompaniment to barbecue and grilled meats.  It is cool, crunchy, and smooth due to the mayonnaise. But it gets boring. There is no rule that says you cannot spice coleslaw up. There is also no rule that says you need to shred your own cabbage. It is perfectly acceptable to buy packaged shredded cabbage or coleslaw mix in the produce department. I use a combination of shredded cabba...

It is summer. The weather is hot, humid, and sticky. It is ice cream weather. Ice cream, sorbet, sherbet, gelato, and other frozen confections. Heck, on a hot summer day even some sweet flavored syrup over crushed ice is great. Chicago Tribune columnist, foodie, and sometimes foodie trouble maker, John Kass, put a picture on his Facebook page of ice cream drizzled with olive oil sprinkled with sea salt. This created quite the conversation. Mr...

Who are Demario Bailey, Amari Brown, Jonylah Watkins, Hadiya Pendleton, Antonio Smith? How about going back further? Who are Laketa Crosby, Dantrell Davis, or Eric Morse?

They have four things in common:

They were murdered on the streets of Chicago.

They were children.

They were Black.

They are forgotten.
Eric Garner (“I can’t breath”) and Mike Brown (“Hands up, don’t shoot”) are the darlings of some news media people one year later. Evidently these quaint anniversaries are supposed to have meaning. An art exhibit, “Confronting Truths: Wake up”, has a piece depicting Mike Brown as he lay in the street. The names Mike Brown... <a href="http://www.chicagonow.com/interesting-chicago/2015/07/chicago-city-of-cowards/" class="more-link">Read more »</a>

Walter Palmer is being tarred and feathered as evil personified walking among us. All he did was kill a stupid lion in Africa. Organized criminals are responsible for the deaths of innocent children in Chicago. They are nameless and faceless. The news media and politicians want it that way.
Social media heads are exploding over the trophy killing of Cecil the lion. The news media has its teeth in this story too. For the unaware and people who live meaningful useful lives, a Minnesota dentist shot a lion in Zimbabwe. He paid fifty thousand dollars for the hunt. It turns out that the hunt... <a href="http://www.chicagonow.com/interesting-chicago/2015/07/kidslivesmatter-not-some-lions/" class="more-link">Read more »</a>

In 1842, the American Land Company donated a three acre site of land to the City of Chicago. The tract, a former cow path with a well for watering cattle, was to be used as a public park. The land company owners stipulated the park be named Washington Square. The American Land Company was developing... <a href="http://www.chicagonow.com/interesting-chicago/2015/07/the-bughouse-square-debates-a-celebration-protecting-free-speech-and-expression/" c...

Za'atar is a blend of sumac, herbs, and other spices. It is used in various parts of North Africa, the Mediterranean, and some Sicilian and Spanish cooking. The brand I have is sumac, oregano, rosemary, and sesame seeds. It is a great blend for pork, chicken, lamb, flat breads, and focaccia. I found a braised chicken recipe using three types of vinegar. I decided to amp it up root vegetables, swapping out apple cider vinegar for sherry v...

Real live crime is tough. It is violent. It is bloody. It is dangerous.

Like John Wayne said in the movie, "Life is tough. It's tougher if you're stupid."

Don't be stupid.
