Note, this was a bit of an inside joke from the Cluster Summit that happened last week in Brno, CZ. The original video that spawned Eliska purchasing this lovely hat can be found on Madison's planning wiki here: http://plan.alteeve.ca/index.php/Main_Page

Fedora 20 (LXDE LiveCD) on my Acer c720P Chromebook
There seem to be a lot of posts out there about getting various Linux distros installed on a variety of Chromebooks, but I didn't see one that covered the Acer c720 specific to Fedora 20 .  So, I figured I'd give it a go and see where things ended up. For s...

Fwiw the difference between 32 and 64 bit is significant. I'm running F20 on an Acer S7 with 4GB of soldered memory and 32 bit runs 800m to boot and log into Xfce.

Some scripts to help with doing demos of RDO (OpenStack) on RHEL, CentOS and Fedora
A few weeks ago I was invited to give a talk on RDO  (which is a distribution of OpenStack for RPM based Linux) at COLUG in Columbus, OH.  In prep for that, my esteemed colleague Dan Radez gave me a slide deck to start from which included a demo script .  I...

Script to make running join.me desktop sharing easier on Fedora 20
A few months ago I posted a set of steps to get the server portion of the join.me desktop sharing solution working under wine on Fedora 19.  I reinstalled my Fedora box to F20 and needed to get this working again, and of course decided "I should script that...

A few things.
a) Doesn't require all users participating to sign up for a Google and G+ account (Unsurprisingly, asking potential customers to sign up for a Google+ account to see a demo isn't generally approved of)
b) Doesn't cap at 10 viewers
c) If you want to avoid the 10 user cap and requirement for Google/G+ accounts, doesn't introduce a lag (which Google Hangouts does if you are doing live streaming over YouTube)
d) While the server requires you to run a Windows executable to show your screen/application, the viewers only need to go to the join.me website and enter in a 9 digit code you provide.  No special plugins required (i.e. GoogleTalkPlugin RPM or EXE), it just works with most web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, even IE)

Some updates... Looks like there might be some quality issues with the SSD (corrupted rootfs) and trying to reinstall with F21 via USB stick no longer works. Had to revert to F20 on a USB stick.

+Andrew Cathrow I don't think it's a general issue with F21. I think it's an issue specific to the c720 Chromebook that I'm installing it on. (The details are in the blog post on the comment)

Using the 'find' command effectively
I used to write complex shell scripts to process batches of files for processing via commands like ffmpeg or ogg123. Typically I'd start with a find command and then pipe the output into a loop, but this was always tricky as many of my media filenames have ...

Learned a few things about SSDs today...
A few years ago I began switching my rotating platter hard disks to solid state drives.  The increase in performance is well worth the additional cost.  My older drives are around 2 years old, and so far I haven't had many issues with the drives, but I ran ...

Well, that's easy to answer.  Gaming :)  Linux is not yet really a viable gaming platform.  Yes, Steam is finally supported, but only a very small subset of Steam games actually run on Linux.

I have been training under Master Jordan at East Coast Karate Academy for two years, and I have been very impressed with his level of knowledge and the way that he works with his students. He gets to know each student individually, to help them understand how to best approach the training. He pushes you hard, but understands each person has a different level of capability. I had never taken any martial arts classes before, and as a relative beginner I really recommend it. The combination of physical exertion along with the almost meditative and graceful movements completely de-stresses you after a long day. I walk into class after work with my mind in chaos and I walk out feeling very centered (and also very tired!). In addition, it's a great activity to share with your children. My daughter takes classes (with other students her age), but we are both learning the same material (for the most part) and can share our experiences and practice together at home. Taking classes with Master Jordan has really improved my daughter's self-confidence and ability to concentrate and follow direction.
