TIL: it's very hard for life to exist at all
It is more difficult than you might think to define what makes a planet habitable, as astrophysicist Christopher Watson explains.

"Most privately owned Greenbelt land, however, is intensively farmed with limited rights of access and has no amenity value at all. Recent studies have shown that its value is captured only by those who own houses within it, and that intensively farmed land has a negative environmental value. Apart from its value for producing food (and much greater value for dodging inheritance tax) the UK National Ecosystem Assessment in 2011 found that intensively farmed land generates more environmental costs than benefits."
What a strange place the UK is - when the most important thing Britons spend money on becomes even less affordable, it’s received as good news. Because that is what “confidence returns to the housing market…

If you believe you live in a 'bad' area, your cells will age faster.

So either stop stressing about it, or move!

Welcoming Ramadan, which starts tomorrow.
Why does it have to be in summer? Is it safe? What happens if you cheat? A handy list of questions you're too embarrassed to ask your colleague.

A good summary rejecting the common story that only private business can create wealth, without any help from the public: government and all the citizens.
Mariana Mazzucato argues that, in its search for a new leader, the Labour party also needs a new story about innovation, the economy and wealth creation

TIL our tech can work at - 35°C on a comet millions of km away. Mind. Blown.
Tweet Rosetta's lander Philae is out of hibernation! The signals were received at ESA's European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt at 22:28 CEST on 13 June. More than 300 data packets have been analysed by the teams at the Lander Control Center at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). "Philae is doing very well: It has an operating temperature of -35ºC and has 24 Watts available," explains DLR Philae Project Manager Dr. Stephan Ulamec. "The lande...

"There have been intense debates on whether microfinance can lift people out of poverty. Summarising research across seven countries, this column argues that microcredit is a useful financial tool but not a powerful anti-poverty strategy. There are also no significant benefits in terms of education or female empowerment. Yet, microcredit does allow low-income households to better cope with risk and to enjoy greater flexibility in how they earn and spend money."

(Dr/Prof?) Yunnus' Nobel Prize was based on his idea that we can wipe out poverty with microlending. I'd be disappointed if we can't prove there's a lasting effect in at least some of the cases.
By the "studies" can be used to prop up any argument, I'm sure we could prove that IAX is still the best hope for VoIP :-)

TIL there other expats feeling like me - sometimes feeling you don't fit anywhere.
When you're living abroad and your country's in the news to this extent, two things happen: one, it becomes a constant item of conversation; and, two, you become a de facto ambassador, a defender, an expert, an apologist.

"When the [lower ranks] feel unfairly treated by those higher up – and accusing officials of corruption in a system where they cannot stay clean and do their jobs is arguably unfair – they have ways of making their displeasure known, including the simple but effective refusal to take the decisions which keep the business of government running."

Lessons to be learned for those fighting corruption everywhere.

True decentralisation of power, will it ever happen? Well, perhaps technology can help.
The OpenBazaar core team is excited to announce that we've received $1 million in seed funding from Union Square Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, and angel investor William Mougayar to develop the OpenBazaar protocol and client, and build the first business on top of the OpenBazaar network.
