01/19/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Beautiful Terry is the ‘quiet type’, he wants so much to be loved, to play and to enjoy the world but it’s hard to open up when you’ve been a one-person dog for most of your life and suddenly you’re all alone and surrounded by strangers. Fortunately there is one thing guaranteed to bring him out of his shell and it’s something we’ve got plenty of at the Care Center – dogs, dogs, dogs! Terry loves to meet and greet his fellow pups and everyone from a hefty pittie to the tiniest Chihuahua gets a gentle sniff and big tail wags. People are a bit scarier for him and initially Terry flinches from my touch (which doesn’t make getting a warm coat on him any easier!) but with some soft words, delicious treats and the help of a neighboring dog, I’m soon able to gently stroke his head and side without issue. I sit on the bench and call him over and to my happy surprise he comes trotting right up to me, standing stoically by my side and perfectly positioned for what I soon discover is his secret soft spot…butt rubs! He wiggles happily as I pet his backside and when I lift up his coat to really get scratchin’ he does the cutest little dance, stepping his hind legs from side to side in blissful abandon. Out on the street Terry is all about sniffing (and tasting) his new environment and he walks strongly but responsively on leash, taking care of his business and of course, passing other dogs with keen interest and happy tail wags. His former owner may have had ‘no time’ for him but Terry’s hoping that soon he’ll find a quiet home and an understanding family who’ll give him all the time, love and attention he deserves. Could you be his dream come true?

01/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
On 1/13/2015 Terry came to us as owner surrendered. According to the owner Terry lived with one adult, gets along with children, but does not like strangers and no known bite history. The Assistant’s observations: cautious when approached; flinches when touched walked well on leash to the assessment room. During the assessment Terry appeared anxious trembling and eye flashing. Although anxious he allowed the Assessor to conduct all assessment items accepted handling cautiously; constant eyes on the Assessor. During the “tag” (play) item Terry turned quickly towards the Assessor when tagged. When pushed away by the “assess-a-hand” Terry lifted his head from the food bowl. Terry’s fearful/anxious behavior may be a result of the shelter environment. It is the recommendation of the Behavior department Terry may be adopted by an experienced owner who will allow Terry time to acclimate to a new owner and environment. Helper: A1025163 Look: 2 Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2 Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, Tag: 3 Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched Squeeze 1: 1 Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1 Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Food: 1 Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy: 1 Minimal interest Rawhide: 1 Minimal interest Dog-to-dog: 1 Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful.

01/29/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off-leash with other dogs, Terry will interact briefly. Given time he may get playful with both male and female dogs. He may try to mount other dogs.

01/14/2015 INITIAL PHYSICAL EXAM
Medical rating was 1 – NORMAL , behavior rating was NONE
Scan negative Qarh Flea comb negative, but was Tx with Activyl(Topical preventative). Tense and nervous upon examination Male intact Nosf

01/25/2015 CAGE EXAM (LAST MAJOR EXAM)
Medical rating 3 C – MAJOR CONDITIONS , behavior rating EXPERIENCE
lethargic, nd vet rounds move to iso

Behavior Update 3/8
Terry is a bit fearful of the shelter environment. He walks with a cautious body language. He was not sociable, and was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. Terry allows handling but was a bit fearful and cautious of the surrounding. Terry did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide.
The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. Terry needs an adopter that can provide him a stable environment.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away
Toy 1. No interest.
Rawhide 1. No interest.

GROUP BEHAVIOR:
When off-leash with other dogs, Terry will interact briefly. Given time he may get playful with both male and female dogs. He may try to mount other dogs.

2/21 Update
When interacting with other dogs off-leash, Terry was playful and solicitous.

3/2 Update
Terry continues to be playful and socially appropriate with male and female dogs.

3/8 Update
Terry is playful and appropriate with female dogs.

Another volunteer writes:
When you pass by Terry’s den he may be frantically trying to get your attention but trust me, this gorgeous boy is a ‘quiet type’ at heart and once outside all he wants is to calmly enjoy the pleasure of your company, sneak in a little play time and softly gobble up lots of delicious treats. And his secret snuggle spot? That would be butt rubs! When I scratch his patootie he does the cutest little dance, stepping his hind legs from side to side in blissful abandon. Terry likes people but he LOVES dogs and his happiest self comes out when fellow pups are around. Everyone from a hefty pittie to the tiniest Chihuahua gets a gentle sniff and a delighted body wiggle and he’s been a good boy in play group too. Out on the street Terry is all about nosing (and tasting) his environment and he walks strongly but responsively on leash, taking care of his business and of course, passing other dogs with keen interest and a perked tail. This lovable redhead has now spent several months at the Care Center but he’s lost none of his initial charm and sweetness and it’s hard to understand how no one has fallen for him yet. Terry’s hoping that soon he’ll find a quiet home and a caring family who’ll give him all the time, love and attention he deserves. He’s waited so long, could you be the one to make his dream come true… today?

Yet another volunteer writes:
Walking log after walking log from both volunteers and employees laud this wonderful guy (“amazing!” “happy chill dog!”), and after spending time with him the only mystery is why there are so many days of such high compliments and he’s still here. Terry is so dear and so sweet; he appears housetrained, and is such a delightful play bower to all he meets we can’t believe no one has yet to take him up on his offer in a forever kind of way. Please, won’t you come play with him and bow yourselves out of here and into your home? He is deserving of all of the praise he is receiving in the shelter, but we’d like him to play (bow) to a bigger audience—the world!

Fun stuff of life with pets...and just the kind of thing that will inspire relationships with animals for generations as long as it's recorded in a place where it can be accessed...www.pedegru.com because #animalhistorymatters
Finding a reliable hairdresser is so much easier said than done. You can sit down and ask for exactly what you want, but they hack your locks away into something else entirely.

Inspiring…that’s how I felt this morning. I’d been thinking about all the people who’ve contributed to what we think of as the modern-day Arabian horse and my thoughts ran to one person in particular Dan Gainey and Gainey Arabians. As I read up on him I was even more inspired than I expected so decided to create a history of him on Pedegru – especially since that’s what Pedegru is for! Here are Parts 1 & 2 of Dan’s commitment to and genuine, abiding passion for Arabians.
In Jimmie Dean's words: "The most significant thing Dan C. Gainey did for the Arabian breed was to leave behind a ranch full of Gainey horses. He established quality and refinement as the Gainey trademark. He fixed a type."
