I've spent enough time ranting about null in the last few years that I feel like I need to explain myself, lest I begin to sound like an unhinged maniac. In almost every software project I've been a part of, the majority of errors I've encountered are caused by unexpected null references.

Internships are about bootstrapping someone's career, a process plagued by naiveté and fraught with errors. Taking responsibility for a complete n00b is a vaguely horrifying prospect, particularly in the impatient and highly competitive culture of the software industry. ... But it's worth it.

http://peat.org/2013/05/22/ssh-authentication-monitoring/
I wrote a little tool this morning to help get rid of a common system administration nuisance: lazy bots that port scan for SSH servers, then attempt brute force attacks on common accounts and passwords. The tool, called sshame, is pretty simple. It scans sshd log files for failed user logins, ...

I've spent a month flagellating myself with cloud deployment and configuration management tools, and I'm not happy about it. We work in a remarkable world where cheap laptops have gigs of memory and m...

I'm curious -- who follows my G+ feed, and should I share more here? I'm having a hard time differentiating the G+ crowd from Twitter and Facebook, and I don't just want to re-spam everyone who follows me on other networks. :)

I think you have to re-spam everyone just in case. Too bad there's no central source for messaging that would keep track of what people have and have not seen so they only get your message once.

A step by step guide to replacing myOpenID.com with IndieAuth.com as your personal domain OpenID provider.
If you use myOpenID to use your personal domain as an OpenID, you're probably aware that the service will be turned off on February 1st, 2014. I'm happy to say that there is now modern alternative that's free, and a significant upgrade: IndieAuth.com now supports OpenID delegation.

Mushroom Networks sexy ads suck for everyone.
It crossed my mind that the marketing folks at Mushroom Networks may subscribe to the notion that "any press is good press," and by writing this, I'm falling for the laziest of all marketing tricks. C'est la vie. If I'm going to take the bait, I might as well go for hook, line, and sinker.

Sales 101 for Freelance Developers

http://peat.org/2013/05/07/sales-for-developers/
This morning I had the opportunity to overhear a young freelance developer talk with a store owner about a potential e-commerce project. It reminded me of a lot of the early pitches I made when I first started freelancing: a somewhat aimless and overly technical conversation that ended ...

"Oh, bro, that evening was the fun evening!"

I think we have different definitions for the word "fun."
Stephan with his friends, Gail and Betty. My friend Stephan is a freelance boat captain and owns his own boat charter business in the Seychelles. It's a pretty amazing gig, all things considered. A couple of years ago, however, Stephan was asked to be Master of the Vessel on a ship sailing from the Seychelles to an island near Somalia. (That title is essentially the same thing as "Captain," by the way, which means he was basically in charge of ...
