Interesting new chip and useful proof of concept crowd-funded project based on said chip. My high frequency hearing loss makes it difficult to pull voices out of a noisy room. Maybe I need this implanted...
Voices can easily be drowned out in modern special-effects-laden entertainment and noisy office, urban and worksite environments. But bigger speakers and a better amplifier won’t improve muddy vocals; they will only make it more apparent that the vocals are muddy.

AMD forms a JV to support Chinese designed x86 server SoCs. Now China has architecture licenses to all three major 64-bit CPU architectures - ARM, Power, & x86. http://onforb.es/22RiVL0
TIRIAS Research believes that it is likely to be the upcoming Zen core.

What is "virtual reality"? Isn't natural reality good enough? Does this mean that real reality is no longer redundant? And where do augmented reality and mixed reality fit in? First in a series on these new technologies.

Mixed reality’s tight orchestration of sensors, communications and computing is incredibly difficult, even using the best of today’s state-of-the-art technology.

The implications of software-defined architecture (SDx) on data center operations are profound. SDx will enable data center operators to scale with emerging Internet of Things (IoT) deployments. This is my high level view of where "software-defied" data center architecture is heading.
In this Pipeline article on software defined datacenter infrastructure and network virtualization, Paul Teich discusses virtual machines, network function virtualization (NFV), the impact of IoT and the disruption that this will cause in the data center.

My take on Fossil's new Q Series smartphone accessories & interaction design for #wearables   http://onforb.es/1MACDC3 +TIRIAS Research  #UX   #uxdesign   #wearabletech  - also see companion post at http://www.tiriasresearch.com/clash-of-cultures-fossil-wearable/
While wearables offer a variety of notification options, they are still not easily customized. Modern interaction designers can learn a few lessons from Morse code. I started wearing fitness trackers to track my sleep several years ago. I have worn several different models, including Fitbit Flex and then Force (which did not harm [...]

Dell has been active in both cloud and HPC markets for years, their renewed emphasis on HPC is a good blend of both #ISC16 #SC2016 #HPC #DellHPC
Today commercial and mid-sized general research HPC customers are typically focused on product development and multitenant (shared systems) research. Dell’s HPC Innovation Lab built a sizing tool they call the HPC System Builder, which Dell has tuned for their mid-market general research customers to enable Dell’s HPC System for Research program.

TIRIAS Research thoughts on IoT Service Platforms - Internet of Things seems like a simple concept, but putting together a complete solution is too much of a DIY project for most developers. Paul's closing panel at IoT DevCon will explore the challenges (http://www.iot-devcon.com/session.php?expo_seq=20&track_seq=0&pres_seq=1573)
This paper is an introduction to designing Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for designers and manufacturers of consumer major appliances, as well as light industrial applications. Readers will learn about emerging IoT service platforms that simplify IoT product and service development and ...

My first contributed article to The Next Platform. It's about state-of-the-art hardware acceleration for machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in cloud and high performance computing (HPC) applications. It's a story about technology and, well, more technology... if you are driven to know how it works, please let me know what you think!
Pattern analytics, deep learning, and machine learning have fueled a rapid rise in interest in GPU computing, in addition to GPU computing applications in

"History may not repeat itself, but it does rhyme." Virtual Reality (VR) is at the same early stage of evolution as motion pictures (movies) were when people reacted viscerally to trains coming toward them in silent films. Read more about my SXSW Interactive VR/AR track experience...
People don’t consume technology; they use technology to consume content. VR is the next big medium to deliver stories and experiences.

CES 2016 is still echoing in my ears. Likewise, the repercussions of rapidly increasing in-ear personal audio quality will be heard in augmented reality and virtual reality applications in 2016. http://onforb.es/1nifPCl
“These go to eleven” – Nigel Tufnel, This is Spinal Tap Loud is apparently no longer enough. Generations of consumers have sacrificed audio quality for the convenience of carrying their own music with them, starting in earnest with Sony’s Walkman and culminating with modern compressed audio like mp3 and Apple’s iTunes. [...]

Principal Analyst at TIRIAS Research
Introduction
I am a futurist and product visionary. I assess the societal and market potential for new technologies and define market, competitive and product strategies to profitably commercialize those technologies. I’ve recently joined TIRIAS Research, where I will continue to consult and publish on a wide range of high tech industry topics.

I think differently and advocate for others who think differently, by volunteering at Odyssey School and by occasionally addressing ADHD and similar learning "disabilities" on my social media channels.

My son Samuel and I write about the future of machine intelligence, robotics and employment on our Imitating Machines blog.
