I'm cycling 200km in 2 days this summer to raise money for cancer research. Want to help me out? Everything helps and the money benefits the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, a very worthwhile cause.

The night after Halloween, everyone from my neighbourhood put their jack-o-lanterns in the park. The result was kinda neat, seeing the different designs people came up with. Love living in an area where people do things like this.

I've long held the belief that, despite peoples concerns about overt terseness, less code usually has less bugs simply because smaller code bases are more maintainable and conceptually grokable. Read this (old) post today and was glad to see some others in my minority opinion camp :)

Code's Worst Enemy. I'm a programmer, and I'm on vacation today. Guess what I'm doing? As much as I'd love to tell you I'm sipping Mai Tais in the Bahamas, what I'm actuall...

I didn't finish reading the entire thing yet (instapaper'd for later), just skimmed the sections after the first two, but it seemed rather hand-wavy. Specifically the parts about design patterns being a farse and how a good JVM is necessary for any kind of serious code and that Ruby/Python/etc won't do without a good JVM implementation.

I do agree with the part that you shouldn't be dependent on a specific IDE for a specific codebase. Echos one of my issues with developing for iOS and pretty much having to use XCode.

Really enjoyed this talk by Alan Kay. Work on creating new outlooks, not simply iterations on the past. Forget the present, it isn't important.

This is freaking brilliant.
Chris Messina originally shared:

This is such a cool social commerce experiment. +Jonathan Stark has opened up his Starbucks card for others to use — and contribute to.

It also has an API, and yes — a Twitter account:

http://twitter.com/jonathanscard

Go read the description of his experiment to get the full details of how it works — and how you can participate.

For my own part, I wonder how attaching common names or pseudonymity to the use and contribution to the card would change the outcome of his experiment...

Also, if you're writing an app that subscribes to feeds using PubSubHubbub, use +Julien Genestoux 's superfeedr. Wonderful idea for bootstrapping the protocol (it basically does the polling for you for feeds that don't advertise a hub).

Isn't NYC where there was a political candidate that had strong feelings about the high price of rent?

Interesting article on the relationship between Google and Mozilla.

www.extremetech.com/internet/92558-how-browsers-make-money-or-why-google-needs-firefox
In November, Google's search contract with Mozilla will run out. Will Google renew it, will Mozilla let them renew it... and what about Bing?

I'm ridiculously excited that both Google and Mozilla are exploring this:

http://blog.chromium.org/2011/08/connecting-web-apps-with-web-intents.html

Having the browser mediate interactions between applications > snowflake server-side APIs.
