VLC gets first major release across Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Android TV

VideoLAN today launched what is arguably the biggest release of VLC to date: an update for the desktop coordinated with new versions across all major mobile platforms.

The world’s most used media player just got massive a cross-platform push.

+VideoLAN told +VentureBeat that the releases are the result of more than a year of volunteer work on the VLC engine and the libVLC library.

As a result, VLC has gained numerous new features, has seen more than 1,000 bugs fixed, and has significantly increased its scope of supported formats.

Without further ado, here are the new releases:

1. VLC media player 2.2.0: Download from +videolan.org/vlc

2. VLC 2.4.1 for iOS: Download from Apple’s App Store

3. VLC 1.1.0 for Android: Download from Google Play +http://goo.gl/ZMpYpX

4. VLC 1.1.0 beta for Android TV: Download from Google Play +http://goo.gl/ULepQ5

5. VLC 1.1.0 beta for Windows Phone: Download from the Windows Phone Store +http://goo.gl/DFP2e4

6. VLC 1.1.0 beta for Windows RT: Download from the Windows Store

One major cross-platform addition is that VLC now automatically detects rotated videos.

It can then rotate them using hardware acceleration (supported for MP4/MOV, MKV, and raw H264) for proper consumption: no more stupid vertical videos!

For all platforms, the new version adds support for Digital Cinema Package to play native movie theater formats, compatibility for “a very large number of unusual codecs,” and “vastly improved compatibility” for UltraHD video codecs like VP9 and H265, including encoding, as well as problematic files in Ogg, MP4, and WMV.

Now let’s take a closer look platform-by-platform.

The Galaxy S6 Edge leaked previously, but it wasn't very detailed. Today, renders coming from CNET Korea show off the Galaxy S6 Edge like never seen before.

I have had a few requests to share this widget I made for +James Edward Sved to look like a certain smartwatch which he then modified and made even better, so I thought I'd share it here. This is a Zooper template so you must have Zooper Widget Pro to apply it. Just download and drop it in your zooper/template folder.

Zooper has a limitation right now where you cannot set more than one location for analog clocks, so I searched and found a workaround. It means that the small sub clocks have to be manually set to the location you want, but it's not very difficult and I'm going to tell you how. First go into the widget settings and select Layout. Once there scroll down and look for the items labelled Left Hour Hand and Right Hour Hand. When you open those, scroll to the bottom where you find advanced parameters. On the second line you will see a place that says -180 or +540, etc. Change that setting to the time difference between your timezone and the timezone of the location you want to show. Do this in degrees (30 degrees of arc equals 1 hour), ie I'm on the east coast so CA is 3 hours behind me so my setting for this is -90. That's it. Then you can change the label to the correct location. The only real limitation of this workaround is that if you travel to another timezone your main clock will be right but the sub clocks will be off unless you manually change the time offset.

Enjoy!
