Introduction

I currently work with a number of organizations, including Pivotal and Howlround. Previously I edited Shareable Magazine, and served as Content Manager and Strategist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My work has also appeared in publications such as GOOD, Utne Reader, the AV Club, and the SF Weekly. I blog about art, data, and civil society at Cohere.

Austin via Chicago via Santa Cruz. Irascible but empathetic.

New EGAD! Leland and I discuss the potential X-Files revival, Oscar nominations, Leland’s disappointment with Boyhood, and our shared disinterest in historical biopics. We also pitch an Expendables spin-off starring badass aging women stars, make predictions on how Mad Men will end, and chat about what we've been reading and playing.

New feature on Culture Coin, a proposed alternative currency that would allow artists to pool their resources and build a self-sustaining circle of resilience.
Funding the arts has never been an easy proposition, and the ongoing economic malaise only intensifies the challenges. Artists eke out hardscrabble existences, funding their work through day jobs, the adjunct instructor higher education treadmill, and a smattering of grants from depleted ...

Three days to go! Please vote for "Disobeying the Smartphone," the SXSW proposal I submitted with +Emily Wright , about how civic technology can better serve citizens and communities by using old-school tech (SMS, paper, etc) and on-the-ground organizing.
Description. "Civic hacking" is a term embraced by many of the tech-savvy citizens applying the distributed, open source, and collaborative principles of the web to address civic problems. Despite the...

New EGAD! Leland and I discuss Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and what we've been reading, including Lawrence Wright’s Scientology expose and The Goldfinch. Also: devil-worshipping rocket engineer Jack Parsons, character-driven science fiction, and more.

What can civic technologists learn from civic-minded artists, and vice versa? Vote for me and +Emily Wright 's SXSW panel: Taking it to the Street: Neighborhood as Interface.
Taking it to the Street: Neighborhood as Interface. Civic tech, engaged artists, and makers are doing amazing things in their own silos, but what can happen when neighbors and creators step out of their spaces and collaborate? On a grassroots, neighborhood-by-neighborhood level, there's great ...
