my nagging doubts about what motivates people to give…
This post may be a bit of a downer for some of my bleeps. It mixes economics and altruism. It raises questions about human nature. You've been warned. If you don't want to leave the happy bubble of self satisfaction about your charitable giving, stop reading. And even if you do, ...

Here is an interesting development: the Hewlett Foundation is reducing funding to Effective Philanthropy organizations (informing donors about the effectiveness of the organizations they support).
“If we had any impact, it was not a discernable or measurable impact in achieving the goal.” and “Personal philanthropy may sometimes be so profoundly emotional as to be invulnerable to rational analysis.”

Thanks for your comments and ideas.
Jeff/Kevin- if you'd like to write up your noodling on the effectiveness issue, I'd be happy to have it be a guest post here.
Nice to "meet" you Rob- it is a 3d party payor, but without a lot of incentives or responsiveness to signaling.
Sara- it is a journey, isn't it? Except hard to figure out what the odometer is measuring (other than time).

I recently read Salman Khan's book "One World Classroom". In addition to some provocative ideas on education, this podcast (and the related HBR article) give some great perspective on Khan Academy as a startup. In particular, the podcast has some interesting comments on why it is a non-profit.

Some ideas for year end giving.
For the fifth year in a row, I am posting some information about our family's charitable giving. This is a time of year when we are focused on giving to others. A time when we spend time with, and give presents to, our friends and families. And a time to support charities that do meaningful work ...

I don't often find myself on the same side of an issue with Jeffrey Sachs, but he has taken on the randomistas, and their use of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) in development. As my bleeps know, I have some issues with RCTs as well. (See "If RCT's Could Kill" and "Is It Right to Have the ...

I have been using Brave New Wheel for several years as my local bike shop. Good mechanics, nice vibe, helpful advice and lots of old parts for older bikes. Two thumbs up.
