Spending the morning filming at HP Labs, Bristol, on how research by colleagues here in +Cardiff University School of Mathematics has led to algorithms for data security now used globally in HP products. This will form part of our forthcoming school engagement video :)

We'll be broadcasting talks from this seminar live on Thursday 14th May. We are delighted that Mr Daniel Thayer, a senior research analyst at the SAIL (Secure Anonymised Information Linkage) Databank, will be speaking at this event about the potential of the wide array of data held by SAIL to revolutionise medical research and increase the pace of healthcare innovation. This talk will be followed by a series of short ‘lightning talks’ by members of the Operational Research Group at Cardiff University, overviewing key mathematical techniques. Each presentation will include both a brief explanation of what each technique is and a short case study exemplifying how it has been used to improve the design and delivery of NHS care in practice.

A full agenda for the event is available at

If you're interested in attending the breakout sessions in person, but haven't registered yet, please drop me a line to let me know!
This Hangout On Air is hosted by Julie Vile. The live video broadcast will begin soon.

Great to see such a high turnout and interest for the first of several sessions to detail +Cardiff University's portfolio of initiatives to enhance the student experience (eg £38m investment coming to upgrade physical teaching spaces - hurrah!). So much of the effort recently seems to have gone into the research exercise (REF) so awesome that teaching and learning is rightfully getting attention and investment.

Absolutely +Theron Hitchman - plus excitingly we in Maths are moving to a new shiny building in just over 2 years, to be co-located with Computer Science (so time to start dreaming what we'd like inside :) )

Possibly my proudest citation... I had to check the notification wasn't dated April 1st. Apparently my past research on maternity risk is related to balsamic vinegar of Modena analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy :)

The Minister for Education just sat in my school outreach session at a Maths event being held in Swansea University. You can see him in the photo watching on, along with the Vice Chancellor of the University, as the students were having fun playing my epidemic role-play activity. Thankfully the session seemed to go really well with lots of engagement from the students. They were great! The Minister left smiling at least and it was a great honour to be invited and have him come and participate.

instead of rubber stamp monarch, we have rubber stamp president, mostly very old and in diapers, but respected by their party for their past leadership.

Introducing my new office... for 2 days! Wonderful to be back at Gregynog for the Welsh Mathematics Colloquium. Arrived early to benefit from the absolute peace in this beautiful library and get some work done. No one else in sight still. Just the ticking of the clock and the tweeting of the birds outside :) Bliss.

If you teach maths at university (or even FE) and you're at all interested in online assessment, please consider attending this free workshop I'm running in Loughborough.
It's two days (of which you can attend one, the other, or both) all about Numbas, the open-source e-assessment system I'm in charge of at Newcastle University.

Just nearing the end of the 3-day workshop on Data Mining with Applications to Healthcare.  Been a blast with a great tutor, Dr Kemal Kılıç (Sabancı University, Istanbul) and attended by 27 delegates (mostly PhD students / post-docs) from remarkably 12 different nations :)  My gratitude to Kemal for giving his time so freely.

+Paul Harper I also saw it through a welding mask. It was kindly supplied to me by a neighbour who took pity on me as he saw me struggling with my improvised pinhole camera (hastily made from a box of Sugar Puffs!)
PS got lucky with clear skies in Staffordshire:)

Earlier this week I had the pleasure to be on the judging panel and present a prize on behalf of the Wales Institute for Mathematical and Computational Sciences at a really awesome "Big Bang" science festival with around 100 Welsh Schools taking part. Teams of students (from as young as 8 year olds right up to 18) have been working on STEM projects with an industrial partner, and they showcased their excellent work. Our prize was for the "Best Application of Maths" and went to Cynffig Comprehensive School who have been working with Sony on a quicker solution (which has actually been implemented) to packaging Raspberry Pi's on their production line; this involved the use of lots of interesting maths in designing the system and was very impressive indeed!
