Named by Captain Cook on the morning of 21 April 1770 whilst sailing the Endeavour up the south coast of Australia. Cook sighted 'a remarkable peaked hill which resembled a square dovehouse with a dome on top'. Cook gave this feature a European name, 'Pigeon House' unaware of the name 'Didthul' given to it by the indigenous people.
