In what sense does this automaton have any "state" at all? It has configurations, but is this the same as state?

But the inputs are the letters selected on the letter wheel. Each input triggers a series of 'sub-routines', to use Daniel's term, and it's entirely possible that some of the 'sub-routines' are shared - the C and the G might share a curve and hence the cam that generates that curve. Nowhere does it say that a simple state machine can't just have a 1:1 correspondence between the input and the state it generates, but in any case here I suspect this machine is more complex than that.
