I'm thinking of a cicada fry tomorrow night. All of those poor cicadas have to be good for something!

Hello, I'm a third year PhD student interested in the GSOC. I have been trained in molecular phylogenetics and organismal biology and I have recently begun to try my hand at programming to handle some of the new data that we have been generating. One of the really interesting portions of the GSOC is the "Extend PartitionFinder to automatically partition DNA and protein alignments." being led by +Rob Lanfear and Brett Calcott. I've been thinking a lot about this problem recently and have been working on some solutions to automatically determine an optimal number of partitions for a site-specific rate model that we use in our phylogenetics research using transcriptomes. I imagine some of the solutions that I have discovered would have a fair amount of overlap with this project.

I am new to coding. I am taking the edx 6.00x "Introduction to Computer Science and Programming" course where I have learned a good bit of Python and I have completed most of the "codecademy" Python track. Aside from what I have coded for those two courses, I have mostly worked on solving simple problems involving removing/retrieving data from files I have been working with for my phylogenetics research. I have uploaded some  of my simple scripts to my github repository. I'd love to discuss partitioning strategies and the goals of the project in more depth. I have just downloaded PartitionFinder and I am working to get a grasp of what it does. Thanks!
