Longing for the days when I can visit the patch in shorts and sandles, for now I'll have to be content with frozen fingers and the first signs of spring. Today there Yellowhammers singing on every coner, the first Skylark of the year greeted us at the top of the hill in full song and song I could hear Song Thrush all the way round. Next week Lucy is joining us, she's not been too happy about being left behind when me and Alfie sneak out at stupid o'clock on Sunday mornings.

Here's todays full list..

Carrion Crow
Blackbird
Pheasant
Greenfinch
Dunnock
Chaffinch
Magpie
Robin
Woodpigeon
Collared Dove
House Sparrow
Song Thrush
Great Tit
Yellowhammer
Red-legged Partridge
Pied Wagtail
Skylark
Mallard
Wren
Jackdaw
Blue Tit
Redwing
Long-tailed Tit
Mistle Thrush

I've been reading a collection of books by Simon Barnes over the last few weeks, starting with How To Be A Bad Bird Watcher through to this last one, Birdwatching With Your Eyes Closed. Really enjoyed this laid back series, especially this last one which includes sounds of many birds which I'm hoping to have learned before too long.

Have a great weekend, blindfolded or not ;-)

Completed my stint for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this morning and what a staggering improvement on last year. For 2014 I recorded just 6 specices, this year's total has rocketed to 15!

A Carrion Crow was chasing Magpies around the garden, landing briefly for an unexpected addition. Nearly all the regulars decided to show up and near the end of my hour a Brambling popped up, a first for the garden. Then right on the bell, a mystery bird that required a stewards enquiry dropped in which feedback from Twitter revealed as Lesser Redpoll, not just a garden first, a lifer too :-)

Here's the full rundown...

Blue Tit x 1
Blackbird x 2
Robin x 1
Dunnock x 1
Goldfinch x 6
Starling x 3
Woodpigeon x 2
Wren x 1
Great Tit x 2
Greenfinch x 1
Magpie x 3
Crow x 1
Chaffinch x 1
Lesser Redpoll x 2
Brambling x 1

We've had a few inches of snow today, it was nice to escape the office for an hour and go for a trudge.

Well it's a wonder I saw anything at the patch this morning with the mist although I'll take that over yesterday's drizzle. Delighted to add Tree Sparrow to the list which I've never seen outside an RSPB reserve before. There may have been a Skylark hiding in that field too but I can't be sure, I'll have to wait for a sunny weekend for that one.

Here's the full rundown..

Blue Tit
Chaffinch
Cormorant
Pheasant
Sparrowhawk
Magpie
Song Thrush
Carrion Crow
House Sparrow
Robin
Woodpigeon
Collared Dove
Blackbird
Greenfinch
Dunnock

Rook
Yellowhammer

Rabbit

Wind and ice free patch visit this morning, with the snow gone I was hoping for more birds around the horse fields, all I saw up there were a couple of Pheasant and some Red-legged Partridge, didn't see a single thrush. What was nice was hearing Greenfinch and Chaffinch singing away, even a Wren had a go but his heart isn't in it just yet.

There were plenty of Robins singing, perhaps this one was serenading his missus :-)

A bracing walk round the patch this morning, not so much ice as last week but the wind made up for it. Finally saw Starlings up there and Yellowhammer was a great addition to the list. Today's tally was a record 23 species with 33 seen so far this year.

Here's today's rundown..

Cormorant, Starling, Greenfinch, House Sparrow, Blackbird, Carrion Crow, Pheasant, Mallard, Woodpigeon, Blue Tit, Collared Dove, Jackdaw, Magpie, Chaffinch, Rook, Robin, Great Tit, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Fieldfare, Red-legged Partridge, Yellowhammer & Redwing.

Another snow day and a lunchtime stroll to the meadow. Gliding around over the trees were 3 Buzzards, so glad I had my monocular in my pocket :-)

Back to the patch for the first time in 3 weeks and I struggled to spot a lowly total of 17 species. I'll put that down to the freezing cold, freezing rain, sheet ice and concentrating on staying upright! At least I added one new one to the list, Song Thrush. Roll on Spring, Skylarks & warm hands!

Thank you all for the birthday messages today :-) From my lovely wife I have a new Monocular and can't wait to get out and about next weekend. I've always struggled with binoculars, having astigmatism with both eyes nothing ever seems in focus but I never have trouble with the camera viewfinder so hopefully this super lightweight gadget will suit me better.

It's a Bear Grylls 8 x 32 by Bushnell and very reasonably priced :-)
