We've started exploring the areas around Barcelona. Yesterday we went to Gerona, España with Giovanni Matta and had a wonderful time. This post features some of the photos that we took.

Danwei Canting is a place I love. We recently visited and ate well, as always. New dishes tried included a special of home style bean curd: ota tofu braised in porcini mushroom stock with snow peas, carrots, and red bell peppers. Another fine dish was the La Zi Ji chicken: wok fried spicy chicken with whole chili peppers, scallions, ginger and Sichuan peppercorns. Check it out.

The updated version of Danwei Canting will be in our next version of the MagoGuide Portland iPhone/iPad app. Check it out. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/magoguide-portland-pro/id1347345371?mt=8

Birdoswald. I thought it was a funny name and looks mispelled. But anyway, it’s is an excavated Roman fort and museum, and an excellent place to stop if you're interested in the history of Hadrian's Wall. There is a good museum and gift shop at Birdoswald, but the more interesting remains are the fort walls outside. For example, there is a lucky phallus, a stone carving in one of the outside walls.

Birdoswald is in our MagoGuide UK iPhone/iPad app. Check it out here. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/magoguide-uk-pro/id1361362138?mt=8

Tanner Creek Tavern in SW Portland is another one of those places that we wanted to like a lot, but just couldn’t. The good things included nice decor, very nice staff, and very good beer. But all of that couldn’t over come the problems we had with the food. For example, this is the first time we ever sent fries back because they were cold and the kitchen simply tossed those same fries into the fry basket and served them back up. Not a good idea.

Bread and Ink Cafe always has folks in it, but there's hardly ever a line out front for breakfast and that's telling. All of the great breakfast places of Portland have lines out front at some point during the breakfast serving period. So if you're in the SE and hunger for a great breakfast, skip Bread and Ink and head over to Trinket, Jam on Hawthorne, Cricket Cafe, or Screendoor Restaurant. All of them are better than Bread and Ink.

The other day Morgan and I wanted to go out to breakfast and picked Screen Door, one of our newest favorite places for breakfast. But wait… look at the line out the door. I was seriously bummed. Then Morgan remembered that Jam on Hawthorne had reopened the Cricket Cafe on SE Belmont. Yeah!
We went, we ate, and we loved it. It’s small and intimate, but there wasn’t a line waiting halfway around the block and the breakfast was really good. So our trifecta of three great breakfast places in SE is going to have to be extended. I just looked that up. It’s called a quadfecta.

On our latest visit to Ava Gene's we sat at the chef's counter and had a most excellent meal. So much so that we've upgraded Ava Gene's from a 3.5 rostra to.... 4 rostras! Yes, the coveted 4 rostras. Colin, the line cook whose station was in front of us, entertained and answered questions. We thank you, sir. Check out Morgan's updated review.

After the Ankeny Tap and Table, and Cardinal Club, Team Mago headed over to The Goose, the third in our trifecta of bars and beers for the evening. The Goose was great! Good beer and really good vibes. That is, until we ordered the squash flautas.

Remember, we had drunk and eaten our way through two bars already. We thought we were being reasonable by only ordering one small plate to share. NOT. These flautas turned out to be a ginormous chimichanga-like beast that completely enveloped the plate. It was good, but oh my. We came very near to hurting ourselves.

We’re going to have to go back to The Goose when we’re hungry. In the meantime, we had a great time and recommend that you stop by if you’re in the neighborhood.

The next stop on our three bar bender after Ankeny Tap & Table was the Cardinal Club. This is a place we've wandered in to from time to time for drinks, but these were our first nibbles. I must say... they were great. And we loved the bartendress who was very friendly and put up with our stupid questions. We've vowed to go back for dinner.

Morgan always has great ideas. The other night he says... "Let's go bar hopping. We can hit three bars around happy hour and try out their appetizers." What a great idea! So off we went and the Ankeny Tap & Table was our first stop. If they hadn't had a beer club dinner scheduled, we would probably have never left. The beer was great and the food delicious. We'll definitely be going back to try out their mains. Next up... the Cardinal Club.
