Did you know there are washable furnace filters? They're usually made of aluminum, but synthetic fabric ones are available, too. Most last 5-10 years. Higher-end versions come with lifetime warranties.

American Standard makes some high-efficiency furnaces that convert 97.3 percent of its fuel into heat. That's 17.3 percent more efficient than minimum federal requirements for furnaces.
