Hey, I'm Patrik. I'm working as an IT consultant, which involves sitting on my bum for the whole day. And some coding. In the last months I lost almost 50 pounds by changing my diet and by exercising regularly. No special diets, with the least amount of time per day. This is one story about my process and my experiences. If you like it you may want to sign up for my mailing list. I don't write a Blog as this is like shouting into the woods, you don't get a reply. I want to reach people directly and provide them value. For free.

Goodbye fast food

One of the changes in my diet was replacing the usual procedures at lunch. You know the drill - my office was the place to be for Kebab, Pizza, Pasta, Big Mac and Duck Sweet-and-Sour. This was the same in every IT department I ever worked. Sometimes I had glimpses of eating healthy, but they never lasted long. Starting from day one I replaced them. Through salad. I never went back in the last ten months. Not once.

Yummy Pizza

After eating a pizza for lunch I sometimes felt like I'd have to call a crane to carry me home. I felt bloated and unable to work. All the blood in my stomach was busy handling the crazy oily thing I threw at it and now there was nothing left in my brain. No way I could develop any useful code after a pizza. I booked "Bloated body busy handling pizza" in our time management system.

How can you just change from one day to the other and not go back? Well, for me one reason was a personal event. Of course I always knew I should eat better, but actually doing it... you know what I mean.

Get the right mindset

My wife had a weird disease, within just a few hours they took her to the hospital and I was alone at home with our 10-month old boy. I was scared to death. No one knew what she had. I imagined the worst. She'll die and I'm going to be alone with our boy. This was my final wake-up call. I didn't want to be 40, have a heart attack and not be able to see my son growing up.

Often friends and colleagues ask me how I'm able to keep up that long with all this healthy eating and "so on". Don't you need some "proper" food now and then?, they ask.

Well, I believe if that's how you think, then you can never lose weight and eat healthy permanently. Then your mindset is wrong, like mine always was before. There is no keeping up with anything for me. I eat proper every single day. My body doesn't need Kebab, Pizza or Pasta anymore, I weaned it. And you can, too.

Show your body what's good

There are some really exciting studies about this. In one of them scientists researched why we sometimes crave for specific food. We feel that we HAVE to eat this now (You know what I'm talking about, right?). If we don't, we may just lie on the ground and die. Man, I'd love to have a pizza now. I know I'll feel bloated and can't work anymore after I ate it, but what the heck, let's call the pizza service!

The study indicated that, depending on the food you eat, the contained substances accumulate in your gut and in your whole body. Sounds logic, right? So if you often eat at McDonalds, the stuff (pardon me, I'm not a biologist) they put in their Big Macs sediments in your organism. This means, there will be days where you absolutely crave for a Big Mac, because your body demands a refill of the bacteria and constituents and whatever.

If you change this and regularly eat something healthy the bad stuff will go away and be replaced by good stuff. That's why - and somehow people don't believe me - I crave for my big bowl of salad and vegetables for lunch. This is amazing, the old me wouldn't have believed me either. I don't need fast food anymore. I'm eating proper food now.

It's great to make experiences like this yourself. You should try it.

Uluru

Nothing prepares you for the moment you see that big rock the first time. You've seen that rock so often on pictures and on TV that you think being there yourself might not be that special. It takes six hours driving from Alice Springs to get to Uluru. And I would recommend this to everyone. Do the drive. Do yourself a favor and don't fly there. Just by driving you're able to experience the unbelievable atmosphere around Uluru. After driving for six hours through flat hot desert you finally see Uluru coming up the horizon. It gets bigger and bigger and as you come closer you get goosebumps and know that it IS special to be here. What an amazing place!

The Outback

While travelling through Australia for one year I always had this one picture in my mind. Flat landscape, red dirt road stretching until the horizon. After a few months we travelled from Alice Springs to Perth on the 1.150 km long Great Central Road. On the second day we came around a corner and I had to stop our car in the middle of the road. That's it! I left the car, climbed on the bull bar and took the photo I had in my head. As a cherry on the cake there's even a camel in the middle of the road :-)

Lancelin Sand Dunes, Western Australia

Western Australia is a crazy state. The size of it is hardly imaginable. Between the sights you drive and drive for hours. Normal distances between towns are 300 - 600 km. The night before we went to the sand dunes on the picture was not the best we ever had. After arriving on a campsite at the beach at night we were surrounded by drunk guys who urined in front of our camper. Thanks guys! As Michelle prepares our noodle water she realizes that after just two minutes there are already three bugs taking a bath in it. The beef sauce besides it is already cooking for 20 minutes. You can do the math. Quick check: Five bugs found and extracted. How many more might be in there? There's no throwing away as we don't have anything else to eat. Free protein! Hooray!
