One formula for coming up with startup ideas that Paul Graham mentions is, "Live in the future and build what's missing." A great way of doing this is to try to do everything on your phone.

A smartphone isn't just another computer. It's a better computer. Certain things, like programming or other technical work, still need to be done on laptops/desktops, but that's because we haven't figured out longform text entry on phones not because those computers are better suited to those tasks. Why wouldn't you want to do everything on a computer that you can carry in your pocket?

The distinguishing feature of games seems to that they have very low barriers to entry, so gamification is largely about eliminating or externalizing the context needed to operate in that environment.

Programming is the perfect example of a high-overhead environment. Programmers even talk about the "boot-up" time it takes to load a program into their head before they can start programming.

Online poker has been transformative because it allows players to play more hands. You can grind for a week and play more hands online than you'd be able to play in a year of face-to-face play.  And that makes for much better poker players.

I think social networks are enabling the same change with regards to social relations. Quite simply, Facebook lets you talk to more people, more often than ever before.

PEOPLE = HANDS
POKER INTUITION = PEOPLE SKILLS

The next generation of politicians, executives, and other master-level socializers are just going to be an order of magnitude better at the game than their older, pre-Facebook counterparts. Obama might the first sign of this. His campaign was younger, more modern, and just better than anything the Republicans could muster.

Was thinking about during Startup School: Is anyone working on a system that monitors an audience's level of fidget (say, by video) and shows a big hot or not meter (think guitar hero) that only the speaker can see?

SEO Gem: Omniglot & language-related queries

Omniglot is one of those sites that's been around forever (since 1998) and like many websites from the "Old Web", it was started by a single individual as a hobbyist website and eventually became their primary source of income. It ranks very well for language-related queries (like "korean alphabet" or "spanish phrases"), and with search traffic like this (http://www.semrush.com/info/omniglot.com), you can see why it'd thrown off a nice bit of cash even with minimal Adsense ads.
A guide to alphabets and languages, with useful foreign phrases, tips on learning languages, language-related links, multilingual texts, and much more

singularly (http://soundcloud.com/patrock/singularly)

I, too, used to wonder
How I would fill
My days
And ways.

Wondered what
particular brand of
story I'd have
to call my own.

But, then,
In the starkness
Of that night
I came upon
A way of living
All my own.

We each live
Singularly
But not alone.

And in that
moment's glance
That shifting of the
Feet upon the floor.
We realize it is
All a dance.

There is no consolation
And yet no desolation.
We live singularly
But not alone.

"What about the ‘Singleton Class’...simply it’s the class that holds all singleton methods of an object, whether it’s a class object, or any other object...a class method is nothing but a singleton method of an object of Class type."

Also contains a good explanation of bindings.

"Callback function is a function that is called through a function pointer."
if you work in higher-level languages, this is the tidbit you need to know for callback functions to make sense.

Here's the take-away:
"in Ruby you are always sending a message to an object. If you don't explicitly say which object you want to send the message to, Ruby sends it to self."
