The New SF MOMA is a tour de force of the last 70 years of contemporary art in 170,000 square feet of gallery space on seven levels open to the public of the 10 level, 480,000 square foot museum. It takes several day long visits to see everything in detail. Since it mostly covers art from 1950 and later,  it has few Picassos and Monets. But we've seen those already, right? It's the largest contemporary or modern art museum in the US, at least until the NY MOMA expands. You can read comprehensive reviews elsewhere, so this is a brief overview.

The first two levels are open to the public for free, and are a complete museum unto themselves, taking well over an hour to cover at a brisk pace, and three hours at a leisurely pace. The first free level contains a huge walk through 214 ton sculpture by Richard Serra, a great staircase for sitting and an excellent museum store. The second free level contains major works by Rothko, Rivera, Kahlo, Matisse etc. There is no skimping on the free levels, which cover over 45,000 square feet! There is a museum store on the second level too.

The third level contains the largest photography space in the US if not the world. Lots of interesting work there. Too much to see in one day. Levels 4, 5, 6,  and 7 contain one giant room after another of major works by many of the most important artists since 1950.

It will take more than a day to view the entire museum. A new location aware app you can download knows where you are, discussing the art in front of you including interviews with the artist etc. The app can also take you on a guided tour, leaving your phone in your pocket. One of many tours is called 'Is this art?', explaining the art for the skeptically minded, when viewing works like a urinal called 'fountain,' etc. You can sync the audio with your friends too.

Don't forget your earbuds. You can rent iPods with the app running including headphones if you don't want to eat up your battery. It will even track the people you are with, in case you want to split up for a while.

There are 3 places to eat (one hasn't opened yet as of May 16, 2016), with excellent food and places to view the cityscape. The largest living wall in the US in also in an open area to provide a break from the intense viewing inside. It's like being in the redwood forest. The bathrooms on each level have a different color scheme and are themselves, works of art. Visit them all! The stair cases with views are also works of art.

Admission is $25, $19 for 19-24 year olds, and free for 18 and under. There is a senior discount. It's next to the Moscone convention center near where the new supertall hi rises are going up. It's only two blocks from two different underground BART and MUNI stations, so you don't have to drive into the city. Unlimited shopping is within walking distance.

Definitely go see it!

Even the New York Times likes it.

I drew the underlying image in Photoshop and ran it through Deep Dream. Weird!

Excellent article on ways to improve Google plus. Read it!

How to fix Google+.

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/TFqqXy )

Through much of its existence, Google's social network has often been criticized as a "ghost town" that's "dead" and about to be shut down. The criticisms always come from non-users.

Google+ fans always chime in to rebut those criticisms, often flooding the story or post with disagreement. With all those passionate users, how can it be a ghost town?

The controversy about Google+ engagement never seems to end.

But whatever the current level of activity on Google+ is, it could be vastly higher if Google itself wasn't holding back users by suppressing public posts, removing comments, hiding amazing content and failing to fully use the technology it has already developed.

Here are 10 ways Google could radically crank up the engagement on Google+:

Introduction

I am a database and statistical algorithm programmer working in the field of birth defects research at The University of California, San Francisco. I also write science fiction and am fascinated with the rapid advances in genetic engineering and artificial intelligence. In 30 years or so, computers and the software running them will match our intelligence, then surpass it. What then?

In addition to photography, I create abstract, color field art in Photoshop. See my art website.

I'm writing a science fiction story about a possible end to the human species, but not via the typical dystopian future or calamity. It's actually an uplifting story. The first one of two, 300 page books are on my website. The first one is free! More will follow.

I post photos and science oriented topics. I am interested in many things besides photography! Any branch of science, humanities or the arts is fair game for me. My politics are centrist, so you will not get extremist or concrete thinking here.

For my photography, I scour the landscape and seascape looking for the best views at the right moment.

I learned how to do photography by observation and studying the works of the masters of landscape painting, and so can you!

I have also written a 325 page PDF eBook that will help you to develop the sort of vision that will put a fine work of your own photography on your wall. Go to my photo website below. I discuss how the greatest painters in history created their masterpieces and how modern photographers can learn time-tested methods for creating fine works of art with their cameras. There are no easy answers to developing vision, but fortunately we can learn from the old masters! I also wrote a book about 40 of by best loved photos, with details about each one.
