The first in a series of my science fiction story is available for FREE download in many formats on Smashwords! Book two is published and I'm halfway through book three. About 90,000 words each.

Here's the synopsis:

We've existed in our modern form for a small fraction of 1% of the lifespan of the Earth. Yet we feel as though we'll be the dominant species forever more. What if we're wrong? Could the human race be just another link in the long chain of evolution? What if our species is ephemeral? How could it happen? Who or what would replace us? Could our extinction be a good thing for those who follow us? After all, we regard the extinction of the dinosaurs as a good thing for those who followed, including us.

Astrobiologist Nisha Chandra specialized in evolution, which led us to becoming the alpha species on Earth. She knew our species was ephemeral, but she didn't expect it to happen in the way it did.

They came to Earth but didn't care. We were just another life form to be stepped around. Humanity suffered the ultimate blow to its ego. Our time as the alpha species on Earth had passed. Later, we became ephemeral. Not because of a disaster or because of them, but because we chose it.

+Ann Grace Pereira There is a lot of translucent green and bluish seaweed in the water. It makes for very unusual effects with the pale orange sky.

"Exposed" Isla Mujeres, near Cancun, Mexico
During a vacation I waited a week for the sun to move into this position behind these hurricane exposed pier pilings. During the 30 seconds of this exposure, the sun appeared and disappeared below the horizon as a fleeting red blob!

Introduction

I am a database and statistical algorithm programmer working in the field of birth defects research at The University of California, San Francisco. I also write science fiction and am fascinated with the rapid advances in genetic engineering and artificial intelligence. In 30 years or so, computers and the software running them will match our intelligence, then surpass it. What then?

I'm writing a science fiction story about a possible end to the human species, but not via the typical dystopian future or calamity. It's actually an uplifting story. The first one of two, 300 page books are on my website. The first one is free! More will follow.

I post photos and science oriented topics. I am interested in many things besides photography! Any branch of science, humanities or the arts is fair game for me. My politics are centrist, so you will not get extremist or concrete thinking here.

For my photography, I scour the landscape and seascape looking for the best views at the right moment.

I learned how to do photography by observation and studying the works of the masters of landscape painting, and so can you!

I have also written a 325 page PDF eBook that will help you to develop the sort of vision that will put a fine work of your own photography on your wall. Go to my photo website below. I discuss how the greatest painters in history created their masterpieces and how modern photographers can learn time-tested methods for creating fine works of art with their cameras. There are no easy answers to developing vision, but fortunately we can learn from the old masters! I also wrote a book about 40 of by best loved photos, with details about each one.
