In the participant's defense, they were not told the study was specifically looking into their knowledge of tech terms, but when 18% of those polled identified "Blu-ray" as a marine animal, and 15% thought "software" was comfortable clothing." I can only sympathize with the venerable Dr. Farnsworth and not "...want to live on this planet anymore."
Granted, I have been in my industry for 14 years in a number of levels where I learned the basics to where I am now, but to me this is a (very) sad example why our country is so bloody far down the list of countries that produce scientists and engineers and mathematicians yet we have an education system that produces those three professions (and many more) for other countries and people here on H1-B visas but is ignored for far more shallow topics and life choices.
Now I know there are many avenues of discussion which can be made here and on many points, but the main point of what I'm attempting to say is what's conveyed in this article is ignorance for product and industry terms are terms that most everyone in the U.S. is inundated with on a daily basis and are common place and by all rights should be something of a common knowledge for all - particularly in lower age demographics, mostly under 50 years old.
For the time being, I am thinking of playing FF13-2 for the hell of it even though I already know the plot and outcome of all characters (which have been summarized in the video below, so viewer beware if you haven't played FF13-2); all because I have never lost my love for this gaming franchise, and quite honestly can't force myself to stop no matter how old I become. #finalfantasy #squareenix #finalfantasyxiii
