Time to Avenge...
MSU's only loss so far to Iowa. The team is at full strength, the students are back and the Breslin is ready to rock!

Unfortunately, Iowa's 3-point shooters had other ideas! Hard to beat 6-foot 9-inch guys hitting 75% of their shots.

Give Something to Get Something ...
is a well-known principle of fundraising, but the St. Joseph's Indian School is taking it to a new level: thirteen gift items in one mailing! And their Appeal Gift Form has check boxes for only $8 ... and $10 & $12 & $15 & $25 & $90, and other $____. Customizable to your particular level of guilt. There is one final check box: "I can't help the children now, but I'm enclosing $5 to cover the expense of sending my dreamcatcher gift."

OK, that is a pretty innovative guilting tactic. I wonder how effective it actually is.

Spent $1000 at Apple Store and got this plastic Backpack ...
with an iPad Pro inside plus cover and (backordered) Apple Pencil plus sales tax.
Now I can read my news and mags full size without so much pinch and zoom! The screen is gorgeous, fingerprint unlock is nice, and the 4-speaker sound is outstanding. Much more to explore.

Yup. Checked Apple.com before I went to bed and nothing then. Got up at 5 for bathroom break and checked again. "Buy" button had appeared! Ordered in 5 minutes for store pickup, went back to bed, and got a text at 10:30. Not busy so guess not huge demand, just a steady flow of guys like me ;)

Clever Marketing via Powerful Computing/Printing
A postcard mailer with customized directions to the store. Particularly good for a store new to the area. Address on one side; map on the other.

Here's something to study this weekend
Be sure to watch the 5-minute video animation.
This interactive map and accompaning video come from Population Connection, a charity we have supported in the past. It's the latest (4th edition) version of their message first created on paper 40 years ago. Creative cartography!
Our population is expected to grow to over 9 billion by 2050, yet the ability of our environment to provide space, food, and energy are limited. Explore population growth from 1 CE to 2050, see how our numbers impact the environment, and learn about the key advances and events allowing our numbers to grow.

More Experience With AndroidPay
This is the notification screen you get. And the transaction list when you open the app. But it
turns out you must enter the PIN on the phone lock screen every time! Tapping the terminal locks the phone to confirm the handshake. Then you have to tap again! And for larger amounts (over $50 @Meijer) you have to sign, too. Maybe if I had a new Note 5 with fingerprint reader it would be simpler. For now I think I'm sticking with my card swipe.

Define the Problem before you Execute the Solution!
We had a nice new plastic mailbox to install to replace the old rusted out metal one. So I measured the new mailbox and cut a piece of wood to fit underneath it and got all the tools to go and disassemble the old one. Whereupon I discovered that all I needed was a simple screwdriver to remove the old mailbox and could retain the old wooden base and just screw the new mailbox on top of it! They were just 7 screws in the old one; the new one only needed to four of them. At least I got some practice with my saw and my saw horses. If anyone needs a one-inch board 6-1/4 inches x 17 inches (standard mailbox size!), I can hook you up!

Keep the board for some future Oct 30.  Or don't you have mischief night?  We pretty much don't here in Pasadena, but it was a state holiday in suburban NJ.  Happy carpentering!

This is why 12.2 inches is the perfect size
You can comfortably read an 8.5x11 page with no pinch&zoom needed. Perfect for basketball program notes!

What is it with the mail these days?
Monday's mail is full of hope... Friday's mail is all forlorn. That was 13 pieces on Monday including a big ad circular, three appeals for money and three requests to sign up for Medicare supplement insurance (Don't laugh, someday you too will be approaching 65!), some political ads, and one genuine first class piece. Friday had just the one lonely appeal for money.

So Friday you must have had time for half a cooky and half a glass of Coke?

A Powerful Article: Not TLDR
"Our criminal justice system isn’t broken. This glaring racial inequity is actually a result of how the justice system was designed to work—a system with an undeniable historic connection to slavery that was outlawed a century and a half ago."
AFSC's Kamau Franklin discuss why addressing America’s prison problem means confronting our racist past and present.
