Pasta Packaging Revolution!?
Meijer is offering a new option for some varieties of pasta: "Pot-Ready, no need to break". Basically, the pasta is just half as long. So now I'll save as much as 5 seconds cooking time! And maybe 10-15 seconds when eating (less cutting). At least there is not a premium in price for the new choice; just more shelf space driving out something else.

I used the pot sized. Once. It didn't make enough of a difference for me.

It has warmed up by an order of magnitude!
It actually got colder after my photo of yesterday: the minimum setting shows -12.5. Today when I got up is was -1.1 and is rising. Almost up to zero now!

It's only UP from here!
Our high today is forecast to be +2°F. And then 12 on Monday, and 22(!) on Tuesday. Oh yeah, the wind is 14 mph, too... #MichiganWinter feels like 25 below. And, yes, -11.7 (-24.3 Celsius) is our lowest for the year... so far.

Yup.  AccuWeather says the Hist.Avg. lo is +18F.  I asked and they replied that their "historical" average is over the past 30 years.  The record was -24F in 1866.

Interesting Encounter on the East Lansing Northern Trail
Tally & I took a long walk tonight. As we were heading south on the EL Northern Trail (just west of us across the county drain and  the meadow), we came upon a deer grazing by the side of the trail. It wasn't shy, just puzzled by the funny little, noisy creature. It was utterly unperturbed by me! There were actually a total of 5 deer -- a couple to the west down in the drain, and a couple more to the east in the meadow area. A few minutes later (after they had gotten over being a bit spooked by us) they ambled back across the trail and down to the drain again.

The best thing about Easter...
is candy at 50% off the day after. I now have a supply of Reeses PB eggs to last until the Fourth of July (at a rate on one large or two small per day)!

The Opposite of Addiction is Connection
Another great TED Talk. Worth the time to watch it. We could save Billions of dollars ... and lives.
What really causes addiction — to everything from cocaine to smart-phones? And how can we overcome it? Johann Hari has seen our current methods fail firsthand, as he has watched loved ones struggle to manage their addictions. He started to wonder why we treat addicts the way we do — and if there might be a better way. As he shares in this deeply personal talk, his questions took him around the world, and unearthed some surprising and hopeful ways...

Thank you for sharing this. As a public school teacher, it really resonated with me and challenges me to advocate for a different approach to helping students who have been labeled as "high-risk".

Vacation Plan by Code
Another clever use of his research by an MSU computer scientist. My only question is whether to go clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Randy Olson computes the optimal road trip to experience Pure Michigan.

GoogleNow can keep these Cards up for a long time!
After my team loses, I usually am annoyed when GoogleNow puts the score back in front of me. But it's been a good day for an MSU basketball and Arsenal football (soccer) fan.

Why Privacy Matters!
You must listen to this: it is clear and cogent. Without dissidents and agitators we would all be enslaved.
Glenn Greenwald was one of the first reporters to see -- and write about -- the Edward Snowden files, with their revelations about the United States' extensive surveillance of private citizens. In this searing talk, Greenwald makes the case for why you need to care about privacy, even if you’re “not doing anything you need to hide."

It's very expensive, that's correct. He's insane if he thinks it's heavy. Yeah, it's the same weight as some hefty glasses, but so what? As for rarely working, I've had long chat conversations using the text to speech, made dozens of calls, and taken more photos than ever before in my life. None were particularly crooked unless I was tilting my head. The battery life complaint is fair, but I just take it off to charge when I'm at my desk. I don't use it while working on the computer anyway.

Honestly, my biggest complaint is that twice now, a software update has bricked the unit. But they are eager to help and replace it.

So yeah, bum unit or he thought he was buying something from Star Trek and was unhappy to find that the real world still has constraints. Basically, it's an alpha-stage toy for rich geeks and a taste of the near future. I don't regret my purchase.
