Msg. from Exec. Director Laura Ahearn, L.M.S.W., J.D.: It was my pleasure to spend the evening educating the Babylon Elementary School Community last night about child sexual abuse prevention and three very important issues related to protecting children from sex offenders: Residency Restriction, Sex Offender Registration and the Suffolk County Community Protection Act. Please participate in our letter writing campaign and sign all petitions - you can find all of them them at www.parentsformeganslaw.org/legislation is below. Watch that page for updates on additional petitions and additional supporters. A special thanks to all of the elected officials and their representatives who attended to show not only their support, but also the actions they have already taken to help pass this legislation (A8503a/S6066a): Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino, and representatives including Vanessa Pino Lockel from Governor Cuomo's office, Ed Flood from Assemblyman Dean Murray's office and Megan from Senator Phil Boyle's office. And a special thanks to an awesome attorney, Mary Porter.
Thanks also to Babylon UFSD Superintendent Mrs. Linda Rozzi for moderating and for taking immediate action to inform her community when a high risk registered sex offender moved in directly across the street from an elementary school in her district.
A special thanks to an awesome new friend Theresa DePietto-Roesler from Hope Floats for organizing this very important event and for her dedication to our community and to the Bablyon K-6 PTA/PTSA for their support!

Very productive meeting today with New York State Senator Michael Venditto, New York State Assemblyman Dean Murray, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, and Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine to address loopholes in NY State's Megan's Law and how working together we can affect changes to protect our most vulnerable.

Msg. from Exec. Dir. Laura Ahearn, L.M.S.W., J.D.: This case is ANOTHER example of the way we deal with child sexual abuse and sexual assault in our criminal justice system. When posting about Brock Turner, I said, "Some argue this is only about one judge and how he handled Brock Turner's sentencing. It's not about one judge and one case, this is a pervasive problem in our criminal justice system and the only realistic solution is minimum mandatory sentencing for all sex crimes." Canada is not immune either!

Msg. from Exec. Dir. Laura Ahearn, L.M.S.W., J.D.: With a heavy heart we mourn the loss of Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs. Judy was a powerful advocate for children and for her community. In 2007, Judy received our Champion for Children Award for her ongoing advocacy on issues relating to child sexual abuse prevention. We will miss her sorely. Her family will be in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless You Judy.

Msg. from Exec. Dir. Laura Ahearn, L.M.S.W., J.D.: A MUST read from the 23 year old female graduate student who was sexually assaulted while unconscious by Stanford student Brock Turner who was sentenced to only six months of jail and released after only 3 months.
