This. Is. Wonderful.
When languages evolve, it's important that scholars and dictionaries keep up. The internet has spawned a new crop of words for stuff, and while you may not like all of them, some of them are really clever combos that seem like they might actually be useful!

Observation for the day:

Everyone's excited about "single-page apps" (what we used to call "programs with UI that did things"), but it seems like very few know how to do it well, past a very limited degree of complexity. They just wait for someone to tell them "what framework to use", and expect it to manage complexity for them.

This is horseshit, a pipe dream, a free lunch, or whatever metaphor you care to apply. A "single-page app" on the web is necessarily a distributed system with complex state management issues. Just about everything you can do to make it more usable and responsive  -- optimistic updates, partial updates, conflict resolution, etc. -- comes with commensurate complexity tradeoffs. This stuff is hard to get right, and it's often not clear until you see the edge cases that you've gotten it wrong in the first place. No framework can shield you from these issues, and some of them actively lull you into a false sense of security, such that your app eventually ends up slow, broken, or both.

Traditional web apps have shielded developers from dealing with these issues, for so long that many have spent their entire professional lives not having to face them. Most server-rendered apps have more in common with ancient two-tier VB apps than they do with modern distributed systems. You have one tier that renders, one (a 10ms LAN-hop away) that has all the data, and you can get away with bloody murder, architecturally speaking. All that flies out the window once you start moving lots of logic to the client.

In practice, this often leads to the worst of all worlds -- apps that are "faster" than their server-rendered antecedents, but have so many state and consistency issues that you can't trust anything they tell you. Instead, you refresh them frequently in hopes of fixing the inconsistencies. This is not progress.

It's now official: the Dart VM will not be in Chrome. Compiling to JavaScript is where it's at.

On the other hand, if you want to embed a scripting language into your native app, the Dart team has a very nice VM for you that's not JavaScript.
We work with many teams, inside and outside of Google, that use Dart every day to build business-critical apps. Their feedback is consistent: they love working with the Dart language, libraries, and tools, and they compile Da...

From the article: "The new method is much faster because it works continually, instead of in layers [...]. As a result, it works in minutes, rather than hours — 25 to 100 times faster, its creators say, than conventional 3D printing."

"No USB Ports!"

Diese Parodie übers neue Apple Macbook geht grad viral. Ist der gleiche "Ingenieur", der vorher bei Nvidia für die GTX 970 verantwortlich war. ;) (mfi) #Apple

Using GWT dispatch easily with Spring in the backend.
