1. One is organized around pleasure.
2. The other is organized around quality and quantity of life over the long-term.
They are not compatible. The first kind is so incapable of perceiving the second, that they actually think the second is interested in telling other people what to do or controlling them. This is hardly consistent with quality of life over the long-haul. It's a "straw man."
People in the first group are often content and even entertained by watching people destroy themselves slowly. Or quickly. Or watching them destroy other people. Or watching them destroy animals. Or anything else. Some people just find that exciting and after they watch one person go down in flames, they applaud and cheer and then dump them and move on to the next. The sycophants are only here for a short while, then after he's finished, they will all disappear. He may like having folks like Mark around for a while, but later on he will probably want people around him who will be there to support the quality of his life over the long-haul.
It's possible that by handing someone another drink/smoke/dime-bag, _you_ are showing them how much you love them. Sid Vicious's Mother comes to mind. But it's also possible that you gain in some way as he destroys himself. Death is a lucrative business.
I said what I said because I love his singing and songs and care about the length and quality of his life. I did not tell him what to do. I begged. As someone who truly loves him would beg. As someone who would gain financially by creating scarcity - of his life and work - and then controlling the inventory would never do. And I'm still here in spite of being harassed and bullied. I'm not being mean or harsh or demanding. You are. But I'm simply begging. I am a beggar because of the sweetness that this amazing young man represents. I am a beggar because of love. Please stop bullying me.
