According to a recent study by Deloitte, 52% of respondents were not working with a financial professional for retirement planning, saying they preferred to handle it themselves. Note however, that of those who opted for professional services, 60% felt "very secure" about their retirement, compared to only 32% of respondents who were managing their own retirement investments.

What might account for this large gap? Let's review three of the pitfalls of do-it-yourself investing.

The jury is out on the ultimate consequences of the financial crisis and Quantitative Easing (QE). Some see deflation, while others see inflation. Who is right? There is agreement that bond markets are being manipulated and that there will be consequences. It’s just not clear what those consequences will be. When QE started, one of the pundits said that if you have to pee on the fire (financial meltdown) to put it out, you can’t worry about cleaning up the pee. The time to worry is now. Risk is a nebulous term; it means different things to each person. Many times, risk is defined by how much a portfolio has in equities. For example, a “moderate risk portfolio” would typically be associated with the 60/40 rule of investing. That is, a portfolio with 60% stocks and 40% bonds. That rule-of-thumb has been in existence since Williams Asset Management was established over twenty years ago. This status quo strategy of investing has begun to evolve in the past few years to include alternatives to stocks and bonds.   #investment   #risk

The age of consumerism has passed over the financial services industry.  This means average investors who buy mutual funds, insurance policies, annuities and other types of investments work under the assumption that their financial advisor is working in their best interests.

This is a false assumption. By +Chuck Epstein  #financialadvisor   #consumerism

According to a recent study by SigFig, a portfolio platform, women are more likely to make money when investing than men. In this study, SigFig looked at 750,000 portfolios and analyzed the anonymized data by gender. In 2014, female investors had 12% better returns than male investors. This means that, with $100,000 to invest over a period of 30 years, a woman would earn $58,000 more than a man. By Jeffrey C. Lewis via Huffington Post #investing   #finances   #women
