Volvo Penta CTO, Johan Carlsson, provides tantalizing previews about the future of marine power as his company envisions it. According to Carlsson, the idea of connected, automated, electrified vessels is already in progress. Woven throughout is the idea of keeping value integral for customers, which centers around the current principle of customization for needs of a particular segment, like with their new IPS solutions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBTmWxs_W2Q&feature=player_embedded

The end of an era: when Portland, Oregon was a port town, many shipbuilders had yards along the Willamette River, and Portland was a major supplier for WW2-era vessels. Zidell Marine Corporation spent its early history taking those vessels apart for scrap, later turning to innovative barge-building. http://ow.ly/Zp6A30fpKPe

After successfully completing several previous engine rebuilding contracts, we learned the U.S. Coast Guard exclusively awarded us their latest contract for rebuilding its Coastal Patrol Boats engines. We have the privilege of being involved with some interesting projects at Pacific Power Group, but this might be one of the most interesting. The ACTUV (Anti-Submarine Warfare, Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel) is an unarmed drone commissioned by DARPA to spend months at sea, seeking out unfriendly submarines. Built by our customer Vigor, LLC, it was equipped with engines from MTU that, due to their efficiency and durability, allow the vessel to be deployed for up to 90 days at a time. http://ow.ly/Ew3K30eXMji

This year, our partners at Volvo Penta were honored for their participation with the world's first fully electric Air Supported Vessel (ASV). The vessel, called the BB Green, was awarded "Electric and Hybrid Propulsion System of the Year" at the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in Amsterdam, and is being hailed as a world first for passenger ferries.

We're committed to working on the leading edge of technology and our partnership with Volvo Penta is no exception. Congratulations to them! http://www.volvopenta.com/marinecommercial/en-en/news/2017/june/bb-green-electric-commuter-ferry-awarded-electric-and-hybrid-pro.html
