Simple one light beauty shot on grey background.  One small beauty dish with diffuser boomed directly over the end of the lens, with a white foam-core reflector board underneath.

Really nice sunset light on the neighbour's barn tonight, and through the cherry blossom, and on the MKI Lovell Space telescope which is to the left of those barns and about 15 miles away.  The smaller MKII telescope is also in that picture.    More material for my Lazy Landscape book - all shot without leaving my house :)

Great tour of the main components of placing backgrounds and floors into a studio shot object on a grey background from Glyn Dewis.  I love using this technique as you get to retain the real shadows from the studio shot - and you also get to see the background textures through transparent objects - all courtesy of the overlay blend mode :)

If you've not seen any of Glyn's Photoshop video series yet - go check them out - there are around 76 as I write this and they're all brilliant, fast paced and packed with tips and techniques.  Glyn also has a book going through these techniques in more detail and more:-

Channeling Joel Grimes for this one :)  I didn't have a 7 ft octa, so I put a 7ft shoot through umbrella back-to-back with a 7ft reflective umbrella to make a sphere - with the light inside pointing back into the reflective one.  Then I aimed two soft-boxes off the white walls, one on either side to create more softness.

The number one thing you need to know when someone says "hey can you photograph my team or some other group of people - "How many?".  Closely followed by "How long have I got?".

However, in terms of photography that is requested (as opposed to the stuff I dream up ) this sort of thing is high on the list.  The effort required is often no less, even though the end result is, to my eye, flat and boring.  Corporate work like this also has to look easy when…

Another one from the Joel Grimes Playbook - this time shot and processed using Joel's methods.  I really like this look Joel has worked on and I think this one is pretty close.

Main light, small beauty dish with diffuser, on a Lencarta Safari II.  Fill light from 2 Lencarta 600SFs with softboxes, bounced of the white walls/ceiling of the small studio.  I use the Safari on the boom purely because the head is so light - which makes it easier and safer to move around.

+Darren MacKenzie Hi Darren - these are learning exercises for me, so I'd happy with replication tbh, (and I think that's OK as long as you are always up-front about who's technique it is).  However on this one, I agree - it's not quite the same - we didn't go for the heavy eye make-up and so I've not pushed the skin tones quite as far.

Great write up by Tiffany Wuest on why you should be using the back-button to operate your AF (or more importantly, disabling AF on your shutter button).

Have you ever heard of Back Button Focusing? Because if it isn't set up on your camera yet, you are seriously missing out! BBF is the new way of focusing that let's you achieve sharper images and makes focusing a whole lot easier in general. Find out more:

I agree, been using it for a few months now and definitely wouldn't go back. It does take a while to get used to it but well worth it.

Hung out in Piccadilly Circus for 2-3 hours last Wednesday evening - and after shooting the obligatory shots of the advertising screens, I wanted to get some of the traffic rush, which contrasts with the static nature of most of the people here - the statue of Eros is just covered in people.  The light from the ad boards lights up the building on the left and is reflected in it's windows - so you need to wait for the right advert to play to get the right lighting on the building.  Then of course you need to wait for this to coincide with a green light for the traffic, and for a bus to pass :)   1/6th of a second, handheld - thanks to the Nikon VR system !

+Cindy Snyder Sarah does do a good squinch :)  She can do a squelch as well - but that's a whole much more angry look :)

Great post from David Hobby to get you going with your first flash pictures - all you need is a cheap flashgun, some triggers, a stand and a shoot-through brolly.   And the most important bit of advice down the bottom - the key to learning this is actually doing it :)
