Sometimes the reality of just how ridiculous this activity is breaks through. The ever more outrageous demands of the photographer ("move your hair out of your eyes, smile more, squint your eyes though, and face the light. Chin up, not that much, look wistful (lol) stand on one leg") coupled with the lighting direction ("hold it up more. angled up more, come towards me, no not in the rock pool, don't sink there") eventually create model melt-down, and a real ear to ear grin, which I love.

Another one with a half cut of CTO on the light for that orange/blue contrast.

We used the Lencarta Safari II for this one, with a strange FalconEyes Decagon softbox with a white interior and a deflector to get a more even spread of light. Some call these "foldable beauty dishes". Well - while they might look superficially like a beauty dish, they're just not the right shape. The deflector still does it's job though of creating an even light, and without the diffusion on, the white interior also contributes to the even nature of it. With the diffusion panel on the front it's a softbox - an almost round one, but a softbox nonetheless.

Beach Ball

Emilia Gaza braved the 19mph winds on Formby beach to get this shot. One of the many reasons I love to shoot with Emilia - she's committed to the outcome.

It had rained all morning, but the forecast said it would be dry from 8pm and with sunset at 9:36 and everyone on-board we set off for the beach. It was raining heavily until about 10 minutes to 8. Emilia got changed in the car while I loaded John and Stu up with lights. We shot this one with one SB900 in a very small sofbox, so the light is quite punchy. Anything bigger was proving a handful in the high winds. Shooting TTL flash meant I could happily adjust the background by raising the ISO, and the flash exposure would remain constant. John Gannon and Stuart Thornes took turns bracing the light and holding everything we couldn't put down on the sand, or let go in the wind.

I love odd light sources for my images, and this is one of my favorites. It's a simple laser generator aimed at clubs/DJs and will change the pattern along with the beat via an on-board microphone. It has 2 mirrors inside to create simple shapes. Throw up some fog, and it looks like a surface you could touch.

The only issue with these is that green is by far the brightest. I've tried a few methods of changing the colours in Photoshop, and the channel mixer gives the best result. Key light is a small beauty dish with grid boomed overhead and off to the left.

One Light

If you've never really used a Speedlight (flash gun) before, or have tried and been disappointed with the results, check out my latest blog post on the amazing variety of looks you can get with just one light, and a few cheap reflectors. All of the shots in this article were made in the same 2 hour presentation I did for Holmes Chapel Camera Club earlier this year.

You can do so much with just one light. One £30 YN460-II for example. There really is no excuse for not having at least one flash :) Robert Harrington gave a great presentation at the B&H theatre on getting many looks out of one light – and you can watch it here. I thought this…

Em is a great actor - and can cycled through a number of great poses. This one also lit with the Lencarta Safari II and the FalconEyes white sofbox without the diffusion material attached.

Another one from last weekend's beach shoot. Turned more into something from a Bronte novel than a warm summer's evening on the beach, but hey! - you gotta make something with the hand you're dealt so to speak.

In this case we were dealt high winds, a cloudy dull sky and falling temperatures. Shooting TTL flash with one SB900 in the world's smallest soft-box meant controlling the background was easy - just adjust the ISO (or shutter speed or aperture but I was already 1/100th and wide open at f/4) and the background gets lighter whilst the flash exposure remains constant.

I added a half cut of CTO to the flash for this one and set the white balance halfway between that and daylight to get a nice warm light on Emilia and blue tones in the background.

Gettng ready to mix it up with some sunset light. Tested my Lencarta Safari II for tailsync...
http://owenlloydphotography.com/?p=2515
A while ago, I tested my old Coreflash CF-D300 flashes with the YN622N-TX “SuperSync” (tail sync) mode and you can see the results here. They worked well, however in order to use these on location I have to cart around a Godox LP800X battery and inverter to give me a 240 volt power supply. The…

+Owen Lloyd Love it. It has an unworldly feel to it. Sci fi/ alternate universe style. So many things are happening in such a small frame.

An Elegant Light

Finally got around to using the Light-blaster on an actual shoot :)

Using the studio adapter, the Light-blaster is attached to the standard reflector on a Lencarta SF600, and focused with a Yongnuo 35mm f/1.8 EOS fit lens. another SF600 with a small gridded beauty dish provides the key light.
