Modern Planting Design Using Ornamental Grasses

This linear garden bed Owen Landscape Architect designed alongside a driveway has a beautiful modern fence as a backdrop. The 3-tiered row of perennials features Sedum in the front; a middle row of Hameln Fountain Grass; and a backdrop of Shenandoah Switch Grass. They reach their full glory in late summer/fall, but, are also impactful well into the winter!

Owen Landscape Architect designed a stunning outdoor living space for a backyard in the exclusive Lora Bay golf course development near the town of Thornbury in the Town of the Blue Mountains. This triptych shows the "Before", "During" and "After". Within a relatively small space a series of "rooms" was created: a walkout deck with built-in gas grill; a hot tub embedded in the raised planting bed aligned with the swimming pool water/fire feature via an overhead pergola; an intimate lounge area with an outdoor fireplace; and a pool deck area in front of the pool cabana.

True intentional design requires hiring a professional; someone whose sole expertise is in designing outdoor spaces. It also means planning ahead! I shake my head at the homeowners who say "we are going to wait until the spring". Well, sorry to break the news, but that is the worst time!

Go through a proper process starting with what I call the "Envisioning" stage which explores the potential of the space. This leads to a Master Plan. Don't stop there however, as it's critical to get into Detailed Design. Otherwise the contractor only has a 2D view to work from and it will be them - not the architect - who makes all the decisions on how the looks and gets built.

If your astute enough to hire a professional (aka a landscape architect) then don't stop at the plan - allow him to provide a full package so that his vision is quantifiable.

These 3D renderings were prepared for a garden design prepared for this backyard space in the Avenue Road area of Toronto. The landscape design features a dining and outdoor kitchen patio and an intimate lounge area centred on an outdoor fire table. Kody Butler prepared for Owen Landscape Architect for a client of Equinox Developments.

It was a refreshing change from designing city gardens to develop this design for a farm property. Instead of trying to make a space appear larger, the goal with this design was to make the large spaces - smaller!
