Today is the anniversary of The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which was founded on the 4th of March 1824. It was first known as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, before adopting the present name in 1854. The RNLI provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales, and all crews and lifeguards are volunteers.
